Hello!

Airspace Link, Inc. is hiring a Frontend Web Developer to help build the tools used to manage local airspace, commercial drone logistics, and beyond visual line of sight operations. Yes, the jetsonian-future is finally upon us and we need help creating the future of unmanned aerial vehicles!

This is a position for an experienced developer, but you don't have to be a self-proclaimed rock star, a ninja, or a superhero to apply. Simply put, we're looking for someone with a strong track record putting front end code to work and bringing products to life (though frameworks pass like whispers in the wind). If you ship solid work, you have the experience we're looking for.

Airspace Link is headquartered out of Detroit, MI but understand that the best person for the job may live somewhere else. In short, the right remote candidates are considered though preference may be given to local candidates.

We strongly encourage candidates of all different backgrounds and identities to apply. Each new hire is an opportunity for us to bring in a different perspective, and we are eager to further diversify our company. Airspace Link is committed to building an inclusive, supportive place for you to do the best and most rewarding work of your career.

About The Job

As an emerging startup, our feature teams are small. You'll usually work with one designer and one or two other engineers on any given feature, and that's it. We work on a regular cadence of bi-weekly sprints within larger defined epics.

That's just a handful of people expected to regularly ship a big feature in a few weeks or small feature in just a week or two. This is a fast pace, but it's never frantic. We value a calm company and deliberate, concerted effort.

We are currently in a phase of greenfield work. There are no legacy apps to maintain. In fact, the entire industry is greenfield. Exciting! However, as our solutions mature, it's only natural that we'll develop a legacy that we'll need to cherish and support. As it stands, 'git blame' is only a few months old.

Some of the bullet points (of course, if you have to be told what the typical bullets are, you probably shouldn't apply):

 - Develop new user-facing features/components (using TypeScript).

 - Build reusable components and front-end libraries for future use.

 - Translate designs and wireframes into high quality code (without cutting visual corners).

 - Optimizing components for maximum performance.

 - Review code and follow security standards.

 - Deploy code to release environments.

 - Troubleshoot feature bugs as necessary.

 - Work calmly and with intent.

No muss, no fuss. We want someone we can trust not to cut corners and deliver beautiful experiences.

About You

Everyone at Airspace Link is here to do the best work of their career, so we work on systemic problems and try to avoid individual blame. We're committed generalists, eager learners, consciences workers and curators of what's essential.

We value people who can take a stand yet commit even when they disagree. We subject ideas to rigorous debate, but we remember that we’re here for the same purpose: do go good work together. Charging the trust battery is part of the work.

We aren’t looking for ideological clones, but we are looking for people who share our basic values and beliefs about how to write good software. It helps if you can identify as a software writer. If you care about writing clean, concise code.

Of course, as an experienced front-end developer, you are also familiar with both the “frameworks” and with the stables of full-stack web development: HTTP, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, SQL. It's a bonus if you're familiar with other languages as well. We do a lot of regular work in Go & Python too, so you can earn some extra kudos with experience here.

About Our Pay & Benefits

Airspace Link, by all definitions, is a startup. Some of you may look on our status like you would at grabbing the Covid cart at Walmart with the askew front wheel. Others may view this as a unique opportunity in an emerging industry to get a fresh start with a huge potential upside. We hope you’re the latter. Our team is growing every month!

We aim to be competitive but won’t be making any headlines. We offer a full health benefit package that is tiered depending on your tenure with Airspace Link. In other words, our benefits move from good, to better, to best.

We support a life well lived away from work. None of our benefits are about trapping people at the office or cajoling them into endless overtime. Just the opposite. We’re all about reasonable working hours, ample vacation time, fitness, wellness, and healthy living.

How To Apply

Please send an application tailored to this position that speaks to us. Introduce yourself as a colleague. Show us the future.

We value good communication and solid writing is part of that. We hope to see a well-constructed cover letter along with your professional history. Forget the generic resume (and it's so blatantly obvious). There's no prize for being first.

We’d like to see examples of software you’ve written. The actual code. We appreciate that it can be hard to share representative samples when you’ve been working on commercial software, so anything you can scrape together will be good. If you have open source contributions, those are great candidates, but you don’t have to be an open source contributor to apply. We’ll also ask you to put the pen to paper on an open-ended coding challenge along the way.

In case this job gets crawled and posted somewhere unexpected, you may or may not have an "apply now" link, but ultimately you should end up applying here:

We look forward to hearing from you!
