Job Summary:

 

Zymo Research is looking for a dynamic individual to join our Bioinformatics and Software Development teams as a Database/Software Development Intern! This is a joint effort to develop efficient, scalable and accessible database and associated software for bioinformatics data generated by Zymo along with public data.

 

In this role, you will contribute to database design discussion. You will write code regarding database structure, data transformation pipelines and data querying and analysis interfaces. You will also participate in discussions with different scientists to understand their specific data structures and formats and gather feedback regarding database interfaces. You will work under the mentorship of a senior scientist and along with a few other software developers.

 

The ideal candidate should be a self-motivated learner, an effective team player, and possess a strong interest in learning about software development and data science. The successful candidate should also be detail-oriented and have experience in basic software development and database engineering.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Discuss with scientists to understand their unique data types and structures.
  • Design database schemas and structures to optimize data intake, storage and query.
  • Develop data ingestion and transformation pipelines.
  • Contribute to ongoing development of frontend and backend code of data querying interfaces.
  • Gather feedback from scientists regarding UI/UX and additional features

Education and Experience:

 

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Solid academic foundation with coursework in database design, software engineering, web development.
  • Good communication skills, especially with non-technical audience.
  • Experience with data cleaning and transformation with pandas/polars/spark, and/or data ETL pipelines, is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with SQL is preferred.
  • Understanding of bioinformatics and next-generation sequencing data is not required but would be a plus.

Compensation:

The estimated base compensation range for this position is $20.00 per hour at the time of posting. Actual compensation details will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors.
