Who is Persevere?

Persevere is a national 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to decreasing recidivism and increasing successful reentry and transition for men and women involved in the criminal justice system. To accomplish this, Persevere offers a customizable, comprehensive program for justice-involved individuals to develop meaningful job skills and gain successful access to the labor market. These services include technology education classes, job readiness and employability guidance, including life skills and financial education, work experience, job search and job placement, entrepreneurship training, and, for some, a residential transition program. Persevere created EPIC Youth (Empowerment, Perseverance, Innovation, and
Community) to improve the lives of Shelby County, or adjacent county, youth reintegrating into their communities after residing in a juvenile detention facility. The program provides a
technology education/software development program, comprehensive reentry services, life skills education, mentoring, and employment support.

Job Overview

The Coding Instructor will report daily (Monday - Friday) to the Wilder Youth Development
Center to teach software development to EPIC Youth students. This is a full-time, exempt
position that requires the ability to pass our client’s background check and drug screen.
Additionally, some clients may prohibit facial piercings, hair of non-natural color, visible tattoos, or similar personal enhancements. This is a 40-hour-per-week hybrid position with no travel requirements, paying $70,000 per year. The Coding Instructor must be a resident of Middle Tennessee, Memphis Metropolitan Area, or be willing to relocate immediately. Relocation expenses are not covered by the employer.

Job Responsibilities

● Provide in-class and remote instruction of assigned curriculum according to the syllabus
● Achieve certification in assigned technologies prior to teaching, staying at least 300 hours
ahead of your students
● Ensure a conducive, relevant, and welcoming learning environment
● Complete weekly lesson plans per the syllabus and submit to Lead Instructor by
stipulated deadline
● Proactively contribute to the enhancement of each student’s understanding and abilities      ● Facilitate and encourage collaboration and instruction between students
● Maintain records of student progress
● Report student metrics to the Program Manager
● Organize and assist with recruitment to promote enrollment
● Monitor and record attendance
● Collaborate with the Instructor Assistant if one is available
● Participate in company meetings and events
● Complete corporate training modules promptly
● Contribute to the development and adherence to critical Standard Operating Procedures
and Workflows
● Engage in cross-training staff as needed
● Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

● Experience teaching youth
● Experience teaching coding/software development
● Teaching certification preferred
● Ability to pass a reference check, background check, and drug screening
● Reliable transportation to and from worksite
● Ability to work while intermittently sitting and standing for extended periods
● Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting provided technology
● Capability to connect with co-workers virtually during non-instructional work time
● Ability to work autonomously and effectively with a diverse group of students
● Professional verbal and written communication skills
● Strong organizational skills
