OVERVIEW

The Hemp Industries Association® (HIA®) is a 501(c)(6), membership-based, non-profit trade association founded in 1994 that works to advance the hemp economy and educate the market for the benefit of its members, the public, and the planet. The Association has a staff of three people and an estimated and rapidly growing 2,000 members representing business stakeholders, farmers and advocates throughout the wide spectrum of hemp industries.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES[1]

As the nation’s leading and most established trade association in hemp, the HIA is experiencing exponential growth and robust opportunities as the global hemp revolution takes root. This position requires an exemplary leader who is highly organized, is a skilled relationship builder across multiple disciplines, and who possesses extensive experience in implementing programs while being fiscally responsible. The Executive Director works closely with and supervises the Association’s staff and service providers, as well as ensuring that the programs, activities, and services of the Association directly benefit the membership and advance the HIA’s mission. The Executive Director is also a seasoned fundraiser. This position maintains historical as well as current knowledge of the Association’s legacy, events, programs and initiatives, and requires an effective administrator for ongoing events and programs, including sponsorships, strategizing, and maintaining and executing incentives. This position requires ongoing interaction with the Board of Directors, various stakeholders including HIA members, staff, partners, sponsors, vendors, industry veterans, and contracted third parties. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are required, and general knowledge of the hemp crop and industries is a major plus.

The Executive Director assists the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities and advancing the HIA’s mission by managing and being responsible for:

  • The forecast of conditions, assessment of member needs, and allocation of resources;
  • The articulation of a shared vision of the Association and its mission;
  • The financial matters of, and risk management for, the Association in conjunction with setting of annual and long-range strategic goals in concert with the Board; strategies of activities and programs to achieve these goals; objectives by which progress toward the goals will be measured; and annual and long-range budgets and forecasts of the necessary resources;
  • Monitoring operations for compliance with applicable law and Board policy;
  • Overseeing the overall administration of the Association including services, financial resources, personnel and property;
  • Directing and managing HIA staff including interviewing, selecting, training, assigning tasks, evaluating work performance and terminations;
  • Executing and administering all contracts as authorized by the Board;
  • Staying current with issues and developments in the hemp industries and identifying need-to-know news and updates for membership; and
  • Developing personnel and office policies for the national office and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Applicant must have at minimum a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and at least five (5) years’ experience in executive leadership of a fast-paced and growing organization. Additional qualifications include:

  • Demonstrated management and fundraising skills necessary to direct the HIA to meet its strategic goals and advance its mission, including the creation of both member-only and public programs;
  • Comprehensive, up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the practices and operations of membership-driven non-profit associations;
  • Exceptional writing skills as well as refined interpersonal and verbal communication skills to build lasting relationships, represent the HIA, and to make effective formal presentations before other associations and both member and non-member stakeholders;
  • Analytical ability to develop and manage short- and long-range plans, including goals, objectives, and various strategies within a budget;
  • Effective team development and management;
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and other well-used software applications (e.g. conferencing software, shared drives, etc.);
  • AMS, CRM, database management and reporting;
  • Fundraising and membership / sponsorship recruitment;
  • Coordination of meetings and agendas; and
  • General knowledge of the hemp crop and industries is a major plus.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

Employee is required to work from their own personal laptop and reliable, high-speed internet service (the HIA will provide access to Microsoft Office 365); smartphone with data plan; and ability to utilize project management tools and cloud-based file-sharing and communication systems. Employee must be proficient at setting up devices, applications and software on their own. A technology stipend is provided (see in “Hours & Compensation” section below).

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS

Must have a clean driving record and have reliable transportation and possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, including proof of personal vehicle insurance coverage and insurability under the Association’s insurance carrier standards.
