Community Engagement and Organizing Intern, Civic Engagement Department

Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta is a nonpartisan and nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting civic engagement, social justice, and community empowerment. We strive to create positive change by mobilizing individuals and communities to participate in democratic processes, advocate for important issues, and build inclusive and resilient communities.

 

Position Summary:

We are seeking a motivated and passionate Community Engagement and Organizing Interns to join our team for this Summer 2024. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in grassroots organizing, community outreach, and event coordination while contributing to meaningful projects that address social and political issues over the course of 4 to 6 weeks. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about civic engagement, possesses strong communication skills, and is committed to making a difference in their community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the planning, promotion, and execution of community events, workshops, and outreach activities aimed at increasing civic participation and awareness of key issues.

  • Collaborate with the community engagement team to develop and implement outreach strategies to engage diverse audiences, including marginalized communities and underrepresented groups.

  • Conduct outreach to community organizations, schools, businesses, and other stakeholders to build partnerships and expand the organization's network.

  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and coordination of volunteers to support various initiatives and events.

  • Attend meetings, trainings, and events both internally and externally to represent the organization and build relationships with community members and partners.

  • Other responsibilities as determined by the Director of Civic Engagement and Organizing Department and staff.

  • A final capstone project or presentation will be required to conclude the internship. 

Qualifications:

  • Current college or high school student.

  • Passion for social justice, civic engagement, and community organizing.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Bilingual abilities are preferred, particularly in Korean, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic, and/or Spanish.

  • A personality that thrives on meeting new people, developing ideas, overcoming new challenges, and encouraging and inspiring people to take positive action.

  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for events and activities.

  • Access to reliable transportation is strongly preferred.

  • Commitment to working 18 to 20 hours per week for 4 to 6 weeks. (May 28-July 03) starting and ending dates are flexible.

Compensation: $15 per hour, up to 35 hours per week. 

 

Start Date:

This internship tenure is Tuesday, May 28-July 03 with the option of extending till July 16th.  The expected time commitment is 10-15 hours per week. This position is a hybrid between remote and in-person meetings and activities in metro Atlanta.
