About Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta

Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta is the first nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the civil rights of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) and Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities in Georgia and the Southeast. We envision a social movement in which communities of color are fully empowered, active in civic life, and working together to promote equity, fair treatment, and self determination for all.

 

Founded in 2010 as the Asian American Legal Advocacy Center (AALAC), our organization became part of the Asian Americans Advancing Justice affiliation in 2014. Since then, we have re-organized our work into four major focus areas: Policy Advocacy, Organizing & Civic Engagement, Impact Litigation

 

Position Summary:

Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta (Advancing Justice-Atlanta) seeks an experienced, dynamic and mission-aligned leader to join our team as Deputy Director. The Deputy Director is responsible for ensuring the overall success of Advancing Justice-Atlanta's programs. The Deputy Director leads program implementation and supervision and development of program staff. The role also includes partnering with the Executive Director to support organizational goal setting and visioning, as well as creating a culture of learning. The Deputy Director is a management-level staff position, supervises multiple staff, and reports to the Executive Director.

 

Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta (Advancing Justice-Atlanta) is in search of a seasoned, dynamic, and mission-driven professional to assume the role of Deputy Director. In this position, the Deputy Director holds the responsibility for the comprehensive success of Advancing Justice-Atlanta's programs. This includes taking the lead in program implementation, overseeing the supervision and development of program staff. Additionally, the role involves collaboration with the Executive Director in supporting organizational goal setting and visioning, fostering a culture of continuous learning. As a management-level staff member, the Deputy Director manages multiple staff members and reports directly to the Executive Director. To thrive in this role, you must love to build and nurture teams; be adept at building consensus and navigating conflict productively; and know how to keep multiple projects organized and on track. 

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational Leadership and Strategy

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director/(CEO) to craft and execute strategies that resonate with Advancing Justice-Atlanta's mission and core values.

  • Provide leadership and oversight to critical departments.

  • Oversee daily operations of assigned departments to ensure efficiency, supervising staff to foster a positive and inclusive culture.

  • Ensure departmental strategies are in line with the organization’s overarching goals.

  • Work with the Chief of Staff in development of department annual goals and strategic plans.

  • Lead the planning, execution, and evaluation of assigned departments, ensuring they align with organizational objectives and contribute to the broader social justice goals.

  • Assist in the management of assigned department budgets and resources effectively, fostering a culture of growth and fiscal sustainability.

  • Offer visionary leadership to steer the organization's growth, enhancing its impact on legal services, litigation, policy advocacy, and community engagement and organizing. 

  • Assist in the development of new fundraising relationships, partnerships, and connections. 

  • Support the development and execution of proactive, external communication strategies that promote the work of the organization on the local, state, and national level. 

Talent & Organizational Performance

  • Partner with the Chief Operating Officer to design and deliver staff professional development programming and enhance relevant staff knowledge and skills.

  • Initiate and refine dynamic professional development programs that encourage continuous learning and growth.

  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, and the development of retention strategies to build a diverse and skilled team.

  • Design and implement comprehensive employee wellness programs that address the physical, mental, and emotional health of the staff.

  • Promote policies and practices that support work-life balance, offering resources to enhance staff well-being and flexibility.

  • Work with the HR team to consistently define, refine, and improve employee equity, including in salary, benefits, recognition, and overall support. 

Stakeholder Engagement and Coalition Building

  • Provide supervision, mentorship, and coaching to assigned department staff, emphasizing professional and leadership development.

  • Co-create strategies to advance key organizational priorities, nurturing a culture of learning and innovation. 

  • Represent the organization in various forums, promoting its advocacy efforts and programs.

  • Build and advise on relationships with key stakeholders, including community partners, activists, and other organizations.

  • Serve as a key representative of Advancing Justice-Atlanta to the public and in stakeholder engagements, enhancing the organization's visibility and impact.

  • Forge and maintain strategic partnerships with organizations and leaders aligned with Advancing Justice-Atlanta’s mission.

 

What You’ll Bring to the Team:

  • Preferred qualifications: A bachelor's degree. 

  • Candidates should have a minimum of 6-9 years of experience in nonprofit community organizing programs, demonstrating expertise in supervising staff and progressively taking on leadership roles in strategic initiatives. 

  • A strong commitment to social, economic, racial, and immigrant justice movements is essential. 

  • The ideal candidate exemplifies excellence in work performance, values, and organizational care, while also possessing high emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills to cultivate robust relationships with the Executive Director, staff, and organizational partners. 

  • The candidate should be dedicated to developing both individual and team leadership, showcasing a diverse range of leadership and management skills. 

  • Proactive in program implementation and creative problem-solving, the candidate approaches challenges with flexibility, creativity, and a sense of humor. 

  • Demonstrate the  ability to pivot in the face of sometimes rapidly changing priorities

  • The ability to thrive in a collaborative teamwork environment and excellent written and verbal communication skills are crucial.

  • Outstanding analytical skills

  • Supervision and implementation experience with policy advocacy, litigation, or legal services

  • Experience with creating structures and processes for program implementation 

  • Experience in a leadership role focused on strategic planning, goal deployment, or performance management

  • Experience working with low income immigrant communities of color

  • Personal tie to AAPI communities

  • Salary range is $115,000-$138,000 commensurate with experience, and is based on principles of internal equity.

Physical Requirements: 

The candidate must be local to the Atlanta area, with access to reliable transportation. The position permits working from home but requires travel, as necessary, to the Advancing Justice-Atlanta office and to other local meetings and events. 

 

Location: Atlanta, Georgia 

This position is eligible for some remote work and/or flexible work schedules.
