Brief Overview:

We are seeking a Marketing Manager with a marketing and communication background to apply their strategic and creative skills to public health and social change issues.

Position Description:

The Marketing Manager will be part of a growing communication team, leading on marketing strategy and implementation for the IL Helpline for Opioids and Other Substances and providing marketing consultation on a diverse portfolio of client-based projects. The Marketing Manager will be a member of the Policy and Practice and Helpline teams, will work closely with communication and project management staff of the IL Helpline, have the opportunity to consult with project teams across the organization, and work in a variety of subject matter areas. The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and starts in the mid 60’s to high 70’s depending on experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Project work:

  • Serve as the marketing and communication lead for the IL Helpline for Opioids and Other Substances, working closely with communication and program management staff, clients, and creative and media buying consultants.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and adjust marketing strategy, including media campaigns and other ongoing marketing efforts, including social media, search engine optimization/search engine marketing, and community outreach.
  • Using analytics tools, and in coordination with the IL Helpline team, develop and monitor data-based marketing goals to inform and adjust marketing strategy.
  • Engage in formative research, including qualitative research, to inform marketing strategy.
  • In coordination with the Helpline team, develop and manage content strategy including social media and website content.
  • Consult with communication and program staff to assess and develop marketing and campaign strategies for non-Helpline projects; identify performance metrics; build systems to monitor and report on performance.

Business development:

  • Contribute to development of proposal concepts and translate strategy into proposal language.
  • Contribute to the growth strategy of HRiA’s communication and marketing capacity.
  • Cultivate client relationships.

Thought leadership:

  • Build capacity of communication team and project teams on marketing principles, strategies, and metrics.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving and innovative marketing strategies.
  • Identify opportunities to showcase effective marketing strategies and efforts for projects, including conferences, trainings, webinars, and online content development (blogs, tools, etc.).
  • Identify opportunities and participate in professional conferences and other visibility events.
  • Participate in organization-wide initiatives and committees as appropriate.


  • Manage projects, including building and monitoring budgets and workplans, and ensuring that products and milestones are on time and within budget.
  • Convening and overseeing internal and external team members.
  • Supervising staff and interns as appropriate.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years’ professional experience in a marketing or communications capacity in a role requiring strategic planning for marketing/communication activities.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree, preferably in marketing or communications, or a related field, with experience in or strong commitment to becoming well-versed in topics of public health and health care; or bachelor’s or master’s degree in public health, health communication, or a related field, with applicable marketing or communication experience.
  • Solid project management skills, including ability to plan and anticipate activities and tasks, and meet milestones and deliverables on time, as demonstrated through applicable work experience.
  • Experience in web strategy and management of web development projects preferred.
  • Familiarity with IL market a plus.
  • Creative thinker with ability to build, work with, and lead diverse teams, including staff and creative consultants.
  • Able to maintain a fast pace when needed and manage and prioritize multiple projects and responsibilities.
  • Strong commitment to public health, and health and racial equity.
  • Proactive and flexible, with a good sense of humor.
  • Fluent Spanish speaker a plus.
  • Massachusetts- or Illinois-based candidates preferred.
