Company Description: Open Energy Solutions Inc. (OES) is an early-stage services and software development company that is enabling utilities and utility vendors to enhance power system operations through the development and implementation of distributed intelligence and enabling technologies. OES is modernizing the electric grid through real‑time simulation, advanced distribution modeling, and cutting‑edge DER integration.

Role Description: OES is seeking a Power Systems Engineer to bring technical skills and utility-industry expertise to operational technology projects. OES’ primary functions are around technology solution development and utility consulting services, and this individual will play an instrumental role on a multidisciplinary team of IT/communications specialists, developers, electricians, and project managers, providing technical expertise and industry acumen.

This role sits at the intersection of research and practical field application, offering a rare opportunity to be a valuable contributor in cutting-edge power systems work deployed in real utility environments. In the role, the candidate is expected to wear several hats: technical solution designer, client subject matter advisor, power systems analyst, and modeling/simulation engineer. This is a fast-paced, dynamic environment, so the individual must be responsive, creative, and able to manage priorities across multiple projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Support power systems engineering operations, including distribution feeder modeling, equipment wiring, and fault analysis
  • Develop, configure, and parameterize simulation models representing distribution feeders including microgrids and DER inverters
  • Perform power system transient studies and detailed equipment modeling using industry-standard software tools
  • Provide technical support for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations, applying power systems engineering fundamentals
  • Apply IEEE 1547 (Standard for Interconnection and Interoperability of Distributed Energy Resources with Associated Electric Power Systems Interfaces) requirements to DER interconnection studies and testing
  • Support operation of medium voltage devices including reclosers (one and three phase), voltage/current sensors and capacitor banks with voltage zero-crossing switching
  • Perform distribution capacity planning, system design, and peak demand forecasting
  • Clearly communicate results to internal stakeholders and clients by preparing detailed written reports/presentations describing analyses performed and proposed solutions developed
  • Apply power systems expertise to design, develop, and test solutions from proof of concept through production

Qualifications:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering with 2-4 years of relevant experience or a MS or PhD in electrical engineering with an emphasis on power systems. A master’s degree may substitute for two years of experience.
  • Programming skills and experience (preferably in Python, Rust, and/or C)
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Eagerness to learn new skills and build industry and product knowledge
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to effectively present information to team members and clients
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • Ability to work independently AND in a team environment
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Based in, or willing to relocate to, the Charlotte or Detroit metropolitan area

Preferred Experience:

  • Utility industry: hands-on experience at a utility, software vendor, or consulting firm is preferred over primarily research-based experience
  • Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation, especially with Typhoon HIL, RTDS, or OPAL-RT
  • Protective relays, controllers, and common OEM software
  • Any activity or function associated with microgrid protection and control
  • Distribution circuit analysis (load flow, short circuit) using CYME and/or PSCAD
  • Communication protocols such as GOOSE, DNP3, and Modbus

We’re looking for a Power Systems Engineer who wants to innovate and build that future. Join us to be part of a forward-thinking team dedicated to innovative electrical grid solutions!
