Position Summary:

Excel Sports Management is seeking a Director of Development to join its Content team. This candidate will likely be a current manager or director of development at a respected entertainment production company, where they are currently in charge of maintaining a slate of projects and building out new show concepts. A thorough knowledge of format and docuseries development experience is expected, and all candidates must have proficient writing skills. Candidates will also have a firm grasp on current network needs, have established relationships with network executives, agents and managers, and most importantly, an entrepreneurial approach to the job. This position will be based in Excel’s Los Angeles office.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with talent, producers, production companies and key industry stakeholders;

  • Lead projects from ideation stage all the way through to production and distribution;

  • Develop, pitch and produce thought provoking, entertaining and inspiring content;

  • Proactively develop content ideas for Excel talent by working collaboratively with the agents, marketing and sales teams to identify storylines and programming thematics;

  • Negotiate all aspects of content partnerships, including production company partnerships and network distribution;

  • Engage with Excel talent clients to provide strategic support and guidance in helping them achieve the content development goals, including advisement on the development of player-specific production companies; participate in relevant talent recruiting pitches

  • Maintain a network of high-level relationships at third-party production companies and media company distribution platforms;

  • Maintain a portfolio of content trends and opportunities and lead proactive communication of both across the company;

  • Collaborate closely with brand sales team in identifying relevant corporate partnerships for select content offerings;

  • Represent Excel Media in the marketplace with the goal of increasing the profile of our content offerings;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

  •  Graduate Degree

  •  3-5 years working in development at a non-scripted production company

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently, while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams;

  •  Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders including internal and external contacts;

  • Experience in sports, media or entertainment production development, preferably at a non scripted production company;

  • Strong writing and communication skills

  •  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills that will enable interaction with a range of personalities and styles in a fast-paced business environment;

  • Proven success in a similar role;

  •  History of strong industry relationships;

  • Meticulous attention to detail, ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize and produce quality work within deadlines;

  • Positive attitude focused on problem solving through a proactive and team-oriented approach to work
