About Nashville Biosciences (NashBio):
We are an exciting biotech startup that is fundamentally changing life sciences R&D. We are a spinout from Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and are the only company of its kind
that leverages years of longitudinal real-world clinical data and genomic information from
hundreds of thousands of individuals to address pressing R&D questions for our clients in the biopharmaceutical and diagnostics industries. We leverage this massive databank, along with
unique computational methods developed in-house and at VUMC, to offer data-enabled
products and services that reduce costs, speed up activity and improve scientific success all
along the R&D pipeline. The company is profitably revenue-generating with a business model focused in two areas:
1. Leveraging our genomics linked real-world data assets to provide R&D insights to biopharma, diagnostics and other life science clients; and
2. Formation of biotech spinouts and partnerships based on proprietary biological insights derived from the database and our analytic tools.
Position:
NashBio is currently seeking an experienced leader for a full-time role as Head of Scientific
Operations. The successful candidate will be a hands-on player-coach – simultaneously
responsible for managing our scientific and clinical staff and day-to-day delivery of our R&D
consulting services. He/she will have significant life sciences R&D experience, excel in an early-stage company environment, and be comfortable contributing to ongoing product and business development. Additionally, this person will have a fluency in human genetics/biology and bioinformatics/advanced analytic techniques, the ability to communicate complex biomedical
concepts to clients and colleagues, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
Responsibilities:
– Articulate and advance the scientific strategy of the company with other members of the
leadership team
– Oversee day-to-day delivery of client-facing projects, including project design, quality control,
client communications/meetings, and ongoing client relations
– Develop standards, processes, tools and algorithms for creating outputs with significant
biological insight and market advantage
– Manage scientific team of genomic and clinical scientists including project assignment,
capacity planning/recruitment to meet projected workload and coaching & development
– Work with COO & CTO to develop potential new products for client service purposes and
interface with VUMC researchers to drive these areas of development, including
improvements to the underlying data assets
– Support the development of viable, alternative business models (e.g., at-risk, joint ventures
and partnerships, etc.) with current and future clients to increase NashBio’s value capture
and through opportunistic internal analysis of our data assets to support such models
– Regularly contribute scientific expertise and credibility to business development efforts
– Support business development team by building and maintaining high-level contacts with
current and prospective clients and other business partners
– Participate ad hoc on the NashBio Board of Directors
– Engage and leverage NashBio Scientific Advisory Board to support above
Key relationships:
Reports to: COO
Direct reports: Team of five scientific and clinical staff, to grow as needed to meet workload demands
Other key relationships: Primary liaison to Scientific Advisory Board and key scientific groups at Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Qualifications:
– More than seven years of relevant work experience, including significant client-facing
exposure, and team and project management experience
– MD or advanced degree in human genetics, genomics, computer science or bioinformatics;
ideal candidate has a strong mix of clinical/biologic knowledge and analytical ability
– Previous experience with R&D for pharma, biotech or other similar life science companies
– Comfort with large dataset manipulation and advanced analytics
– Strong understanding of biology and genetics, especially as they relate to human disease
processes, pharmacology, drug-protein interactions and signaling pathways is a plus
– Strong understanding of real-world clinical data, its sources and uses for life sciences R&D,
and related regulatory standards (e.g., HIPAA, GCP, 21CFR) is a plus
– Experience commercializing technology from academia and comfort working with academic
institutions
