ExpressCells speeds drug discovery and biological research by using genetic engineering to produce cell lines for biological researchers. Our innovative process, using CRISPR plus our patent-pending plasmid system, creates custom knockin cell lines in 80% less time than current technology. Our technology can insert multiple genes into each cell line. The company was established in September 2018 and plans to begin commercial operations in July 2019. ExpressCells is seeking a high-performing, enthusiastic scientist to be our first full-time scientific hire who can make an impact from the start.

Position Description

This role’s primary responsibility is to produce genetically-edited cell lines. This employee will also participate in setting up the laboratory and validating the process. While most of this employee’s time will be spent on production, there may be opportunities to work on developmental projects. This employee will also maintain catalog cell lines. This employee is an accomplished scientist with experience in all steps of gene editing and mammalian cell culturing. This employee will be able to build plasmids, use CRISPR to cut into a cell’s genome, transfect and culture cells, confirm the results of the transfection process, ensure a homogeneous cell line, and package and ship product to customers. He or she will have the skills to operate independently in a shared laboratory space. This employee will be able, as needed, to communicate with customers to provide status updates.

Molecular DNA cloning to build plasmids

Track and order laboratory consumables

Communicate project updates to customers and ExpressCells leadership

Work on developmental projects

Travel to scientific and customer meetings


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

PhD in biological sciences with 2+ years experience in gene editing

Good understanding of gene editing tools and principles

Proven expertise Mammalian cell culture & transfection, iPSC cell culture, DNA analysis software (SnapGene, Benchling, Geneious, or Vector NTI), fluorescence microscopy, Gibson assembly cloning techniques, use of CRISPR

Molecular biology skills, including large-scale DNA extraction, primer design, cloning, PCR, qPCR, DNA & RNA isolation, purification from agarose gels, and Sanger sequencing

Able to operate independently, focus on details, and trouble-shoot laboratory issues

Location:  3675 Market St., Philadelphia, PA. Projected Travel:  5% of work time
