ParentChild+ - About Us
ParentChild+, a nationally recognized early childhood school readiness organization working in 16 states and six countries, is an innovative two-generation program focused on providing early and equitable opportunities for families and caregivers in communities facing poverty, low literacy, limited education, language barriers, geographic isolation, housing, and food insecurity.
The Home-based Child Care (HBCC) model works with child care providers of all statuses to build strong home-based and local child care options in neglected and under-funded neighborhoods. Through home visits to child care providers during child care hours, we coach providers on best practice in their relationships with children and families, add high quality materials and activities to the care environment, and connect providers to resources that meet their own and families’ needs.
We see culturally responsive, high quality, community-based early education as a critical support for families, leveling the playing field before children ever enter their first school room and helping families enable their children to access a future full of possibilities.
Position Overview
ParentChild+ is seeking a full-time specialist to support the Home-Based Child Care (HBCC) Model in NYC, which works to strengthen the capacity of adults working with children in licensed or unlicensed child care homes. NYC has a breadth of early learning opportunities for children, however, many parents choose trusted, familiar adults to care for their young children. Many parents and children are much more comfortable getting care and nurturance from family members, friends, and local neighbors that understand the families’ language, culture, alternating work schedules, or health and special needs.
ParentChild+ delivers home visiting services to support informal and formal child care providers who work in their homes to provide care for children as a profession, passion, source of income, and service to the families they know and love. Because home-based child care continues to be the option most parents choose, home-based child care providers need support in school-readiness strategies that they may not be able to readily access. When we speak of meeting families where they are and family engagement, we understand that it is up to families to make the child care choice that is right for them.
At ParentChild+ we meet families’ caregivers to provide culturally-responsive, linguistically-matched support, in-home with a one-on-one coaching model that engages the caregiver to promote school-readiness skills and create an environment for optimal child development from the start. Parents are able to work, go to school, seek out child care for second and third shift hours, and take comfort in knowing that the person caring for their child is a familiar, trusted adult who is being coached in the best practices of early childhood education.
The NYC HBCC Specialist will ensure the ParentChild+ home visiting HBCC model operates at fidelity, is ready for expansion in other low-income communities, and is connected to other resources that families and caregivers need. Maintaining professional relationships with City partners, the HBCC Specialist will also share resources with ParentChild+ providers and host learning communities to build the adult capacity to sustain best practices. Training and developing bilingual content is an important aspect of this position.
