Aspen's Process Development department is growing, and we are looking for a new Scientist I, Assay Development. This role will be at the forefront of our mission to develop and optimize cellular and molecular assays for in-process and product characterization. You will work collaboratively with a team of passionate scientists, researchers, and technicians to drive innovation. In addition to our internal team, you also collaborate with Contract Testing Laboratories (CTLs) for assay optimization and transfer. The ideal candidate will leverage a broad set of laboratory and problem-solving skills to address the unique challenges of autologous cell therapy and deliver on our commitment to excellence.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform stage appropriate development and transfer to Quality Control (QC) of ddPCR and qPCR assays for rare cell detection and process monitoring.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Research and Development (R&D) to identify new and existing methodologies to support manufacturing in-process checks and product release, including but not limited to ddPCR, qPCR, ICC, and flow cytometry.
- Design experiments, perform statistical analysis, and visualize results using programs and programming languages such as Prism, R, and Python.
- Author documents such as technical reports or standard operating procedures.
- Partner with QC in the development and execution of qualification plans.
- Coordinate with QC and Manufacturing to ensure effective transfer of assays and delivery of key data.
- Collaborate with Bioinformatics team to support data package for Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based models, utilize automated analysis tools, and ensure data generated will be suitable for broader integration and database utilization.
- Present methods and findings within the Assay Development group, to R&D, and to the Technical Operations team in a timely and clear manner.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum M.S. in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, or related scientific discipline and 5+ years relevant experience in the biotech / pharma / biologics industry. Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, or related scientific discipline preferred.
- Experience in sterile tissue culture, particularly with iPSC or neural progenitor cell differentiation and maintenance would be preferred.
- Experience in developing and performing potency and purity assays for biological therapeutics such as viral vectors, vaccines, cell therapy, or antibodies required.
- Experience with mammalian cell culture, understanding of biochemical engineering concepts, and biochemical pathways required.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of iPSC differentiation or neuronal development.
- Working knowledge of functional and characteristic assessment of iPSCs or neuronal precursors.
- Understanding of and ability to perform qPCR, ddPCR, ICC, and flow cytometry.
- Must possess excellent documentation practices with the expectation that methods be developed with qualification and QC use in mind.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across multiple functional groups.
- Ability to analyze and present complex data in a clear and effective manner.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in San Diego is $85K to $135K annually. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Aspen Neuroscience is multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
