Job Status: Part-Time

Range of Pay: $22-$24 Per Hour (three (3) days per week/two (2) hours per day)

Candidates will be eligible for a $100-$200 hiring bonus if they successfully complete the hiring process which includes completing and submitting all their paperwork before and/or within two (2) weeks after receiving the employment offer.

 

LEAP (Learning Through an Expanded Arts Program) is currently seeking Teaching Artists for various Elementary and Middle and High Schools in our Bronx & Brooklyn locations.

At LEAP we believe in the transformational power of the arts. Wed as a grassroots movement with just four schools. Today, our teaching artists serve 25,000 youth across the city in over 140 New York City public schools. Every day, our educational arts programs inspire diverse school communities to be more engaged in learning and build critical skills. Our quality educational arts programs promote access and equity for New York City students underserved in the arts. 

The Literacy Instructor will lead experiences that drive student growth in creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking. Model a growth mindset and love of learning through the LEAP Way, our creative youth development model. Support learners to make meaning of their experiences through routine thoughtful reflection. Act as support staff in the afterschool environment, helping to ensure a safe, positive, and organized environment for youth participants, but not limited to the following:  

 

Summary:

 

The role of the Literacy Instructor is to directly support the implementation of the After School Program.  The literacy Instructor will focus on fulfilling grant measures for literacy by managing curriculum, lessons, book clubs, and reading assessments. The literacy specialist will work with the senior director & coordinator of the program, volunteers, and community partners to research, develop, implement, and facilitate various educational activities that promote healthy eating, positive personal development and wellness, and to engage and support students between the ages of 12 to 15 and their families in the community.

 Position Responsibilities:

 Assist in developing, carrying out, and evaluating program curriculum in reading.

  • Group supervision of youth with attention to the following: program goals, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, safety, routine duties, character and skill development

  • Promote program and activities in the broader community with some targeted outreach

  • Maintain appropriate records and statistics, and complete reports and evaluations as per guidelines

  • Coordinate and implement field trips and outings

  • Create open lines of communication between parents and program staff

  • Manage supplies and organize daily activities.

  • Promote youth participation in book club, various teaching engagements and activities.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

 

* Strong background in working with children and youth a must; preferred to be studying or have obtained an education degree and/or have the work experience.

* Program planning and facilitation experience an asset

* Ability to work with children in a respectful and empowering manner

* Good communication skills, written and verbal

* Strong community outreach and public relations skills and ability to liaison with community partners and leaders

* Good organizational and time management skills

* Ability to work independently and be self-directed

* Must have good critical thinking and problem solving skills.

* Must be 18 years of age or older.

 

Minimum Knowledge and Skills:
