Position Summary 

Maintain all aspects of steel and MRO inventory ensuring on time delivery to meet production demands and customer requested dates. Lead the Materials Department. 

Essential Functions 

  • Coordinates all activities related to procurement of steel for both stock and specific projects.  
  • Analyzes the requirements of stocking inventory, including preliminary specifications, preferred supplier, and date product is needed.   
  • Control stock levels, developing, and executing plans to utilize overstocks and obsoletes.  
  • Point of contact for all inventory audits, working with in-house and contracted auditing groups.  
  • Maintain inventory at desired levels per product demand at local Plant as well as offsite warehouses and coaters.  
  • Supervise Coil Vault Attendants and buyer positions.  
  • Assigns coil for all production orders for assigned Plant.  
  • Conduct annual physical inventory counts at offsite locations.  
  • Coordinates delivery of steel, with guidance from Plant Shipping Manager regarding approved and preferred carriers.   
  • Assist with Inventory during month end with a heavy focus on reconciliations and discrepancy investigation for steel inventory.  
  • Responsible for communicating with Plant Manager and Scheduler regarding supply delays affecting current projects.  
  • Assures products are delivered on schedule, at the negotiated price, and meets the quality standards of the company.   
  • Maintains timely control of orders, amendments, shipping notices, and other documents to assure accurate retention of records.   
  • Data entry of PO’s.   
  • Report all quality issues to Plant Manager. 
  • Create and maintain purchasing logs and controls.   
  • Work with accounts payable regarding supplier and vendor invoices.   
  • Effectively communicate with all departments regarding on-time deliveries, shortages, delays, and any other potential issues.  
  • Assist with accessory, packaging, and plant supply purchasing as needed  
  • Perform timely performance reviews with all direct reports.  
  • Completes training by supervisor. 
  • Complies with all safety and company policies and procedures. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Buyer, 2 coil vault attendants

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Knowledge of executing inventory at month end and prior experience with inventory databases and data entry.   
  • Strong computer skills, Excel and QuickBooks proficiency.   
  • Must have excellent math skills with an understanding of percentages, fractions, conversion between inches, feet, meters, centimeters and related distance and area units.   
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills are required: written and verbal.   
  • Able to work in time sensitive and sometimes stressful situations.   
  • Able to work independently, prioritize tasks, and do research to find answers with little guidance. Must be resourceful and a self-starter.  

Education and Experience 

  • A minimum of two years' purchasing experience is required.   
  • Experience in the flat rolled steel industry is preferred.  
  • Prior experience with MRP system preferred.  
  • Knowledge of executing inventory at month end. 
  • Physical Requirements  
  • Able to sit for extended periods of time, walk, stand, climb, reach.   
  • Must be able to lift at least 25Ibs.   
  • Visual acuity, finger dexterity, color discernment.   
  • Must possess professional phone etiquette.   
  • Able to wear prescribed personal protective equipment and appropriate clothing.   
  • Occasionally work in conditions typical of a manufacturing environment, including noise, extreme temperatures and humidity, odors, dust, etc.  
  • Effectively use a computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and commonly used software to complete necessary functions assigned.   
  • Other physical requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.  

Working Environment 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, dusty conditions, high noise environments, chemicals used in the process, and extreme temperatures. The facility is an industrial manufacturing plant. This position is designated safety sensitive.
