JOB TITLE:  Employment Specialist

REPORTS TO: Santa Cruz Project Manager            CLASSIFICATION: [Non-Exempt]


Downtown Streets Team strives to end homelessness by enabling un-housed men and women to restore their dignity and rebuild their lives. Team Members prepare for permanent employment and housing by participating on work teams that serve their local communities. We are seeking an independently focused, dedicated, and passionate Employment Specialist to join our Santa Cruz staff.

·     Assists with special projects as required

·     Performs other duties as assigned by manager

·      Market Downtown Streets Team to the community

·      Assist up to 45 individuals to secure sustainable income preferably through employment

·      Lead Job Search Skills classes, empowerment workshops

·      Present employment leads to Team Members at weekly meetings

·      Recruit employers willing to place Team Members

·      Support newly hired graduates throughout their first 90 days in employment

·      Construct resumes and other job search collateral for all Team Members

·      Track success metrics and input data into online systems such as HMIS

·      Assist Team Members in the creation of resumes and other job search collateral 

·      Teach Downtown Streets Team job search skills, soft skills, and leadership classes

·      Partner with local service providers to provide a continuum of care for Team Members

·      Help the Project Lead recruit and motivate Team Members for the work experience program

·      Build partnerships with local agencies to provide emergency, transitional, and permanent housing opportunities for Team Members

·      Collaborate with businesses, community organizations, and volunteers to increase and improve employment prospects for Team Members

·     A passion for working with homeless individuals

·     Bachelors degree or comparable experience preferred

·     Demonstrated sales and/or partnership building ability 

·      Ability to handle sensitive and confidential materials in a professional manner

·      Ability to work on multiple projects, prioritize and meet deadlines and metrics

·     Experience in job creation and employer engagement preferred 

·      Assist in preparation of program documentation, reports, and impact metrics

·     Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking ability

·     Must be a self-starter who can work well independently and with minimal direction 

·     Local travel required; may be asked to meet with Team Members at varied locations

·     Knowledge of local economic conditions, homeless best practices, and homeless resources 

·     Develop case files for each Team Member and update files based on daily, weekly and monthly activities

·     Basic competence in duties and tasks of supervised employees

·      Working knowledge of data collection, data analysis, evaluation, and scientific method

·      Ability to work with all levels of management

·     Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow

·     Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm

·     Proven leadership and business acumen skills

·      Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate Team Members

·      Commitment to excellence and high standards

·      Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·      Proficient in Microsoft Programs (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access)

·       Fluency in Spanish preferred

The essential functions of this position require but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting (up to 25 lbs.), typing, writing (in English), reading (English), speaking (English), seeing, hearing, driving, basic mathematical calculations, problem solving, reasoning, composition, and decision-making.

·      Meeting Team Members at targeted encampments and other locations within the community

BENEFITS:  $48,000 Salary, Medical/Dental/Vision insurance, generous paid vacation and sick time plan, optional 401K after 12 months
