Founded in 1994, Immigration Equality is the nation’s leading LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrant rights organization. Our mission is to promote justice and equality for LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrants and families through direct legal services, policy advocacy, and impact litigation.
In more than 80 countries, it is a crime or extremely dangerous to be LGBTQ. In some places, queer, trans, and HIV-positive people face prison time or the death sentence simply for being who they are. Immigration Equality works tirelessly to secure safety and freedom for these individuals. Every day, we dedicate ourselves to empowering and protecting one of the most vibrant, resilient, and diverse communities in the world.
Each year, we provide direct legal representation to more than 700 asylum seekers through our nationwide pro bono network. We also provide free legal advice and resources to thousands more. Through our detention program, we advocate for the release of queer, trans, and HIV-positive asylum seekers held immigration detention centers. In 2023, Immigration Equality expanded by establishing a refugee referral program in partnership with the U.S. State Department. Today, we work with LGBTQ refugees abroad, connecting them with opportunities for resettlement.
Immigration Equality and the Immigration Equality Action Fund also amplify the voices of LGBTQ asylum seekers and refugees through our congressional, administrative, and legal advocacy. We aim to block policies harmful to the community we serve and advance policies that safeguard their rights and dignity.
