About the role
The cryogenics program at Type One Energy supports cryogenics needs across the organization including various design, testing, commissioning, and operational aspects of the High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) Magnet Program, the first HTS stellarator (RRP), and the first fusion pilot plant (FPP). Any successful candidate will be provided the opportunity to contribute to all these efforts.
The cryogenics engineer(s) will be expected to be able to perform thermodynamic, fluid flow, and heat transfer analyses required in sizing and designing various cryogenic systems as required. As the project evolves, the engineer(s) will be expected to contribute to the commissioning and operation of the cryogenic systems as well.
Responsibilities
· Perform thermodynamics calculations for sizing the capacity of the RRP cryoplant, and the Magnet Program’s cryogenics systems.
· Perform heat transfer and fluid flow analysis towards the design of the cryogenic distribution systems.
· Use the analyses performed to provide insight into the design of the RRP and the HTS magnets.
· Perform system level trade-off analysis and help drive key design decisions.
· Collaborate with other groups to engineer the interfaces between the cryogenic systems and other related stellarator systems.
· Coordinate with vendors to provide appropriate inputs to specification and design of the cryoplant and the cryodistribution system.
· Coordinate with site facilities teams to provide inputs to size the auxiliary systems that will support the cryogenic systems.
· Create and contribute to the creation of PID diagrams.
· Create and maintain appropriate documentation in terms of memos, presentations, and other forms as appropriate.
· Contribute to creating a collaborative working environment.
Required Qualifications and Experience
· Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics.
· Working knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics demonstrated by experience in designing systems using these principles.
· Experience working with large-scale cryogenic systems is highly desired.
· Experience working with cryogenic systems is preferred.
· Proficient knowledge of GASPAK, HEPAK and/or REFPROP is desired.
· Experience working in the process industry is desired.
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
· Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
· Be curious, open-minded, and willing to learn.
