BlackThorn Therapeutics is a neurobehavioral health company developing targeted therapeutics, informed by a deep understanding of brain and behavior relationships, to significantly improve patient outcomes. The company has pioneered a proprietary computational psychiatry platform, which leverages bioinformatics, neuroinformatics and artificial intelligence technologies, with the goal of determining a patient's distinct neuroprint to inform the proper on-target treatment option for biologically defined patient subtypes. BlackThorn Therapeutics has completed a Phase 1 trial of BTRX-335140, a selective kappa opioid receptor antagonist, and is conducting IND-enabling studies for BTRX-323511, a selective vasopressin 1a receptor antagonist. The company also has a drug discovery program directed at novel therapeutic targets for neurobehavioral disorders.
The Position
The Senior Accountant will serve as a key member of BlackThorn Therapeutic, Inc.’s (“BTRX”) Finance function. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Accounting, the role will be responsible for assisting with month-end close, ensuring compliance with US GAAP, payroll operations, and assisting in the implementation of internal controls.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with month-end close duties including managing close calendar, preparing and reviewing balance sheet reconciliations, adjusting journal entries, and financial statements
- Manage compliance calendar and primary preparer of local, state and federal compliance filings. Serve as subject matter expert for regulatory filings.
- Supervise 1 team member and assist with A/P and procurement process
- Work with Accounting Assistant to prepare and analyze purchase orders monthly for use in clinical accrual work
- Partner cross-functionally with facilities and technology teams to serve as primary reviewer of fixed assets and primary preparer of software-development cost accruals
- Partner with professional employer organization to process payroll, ensuring payroll deadlines are met
- Assist with month-end financial statement variance analysis, which includes comparing budgeted or forecasted results to actual results for BTRX programs and departments
- Partner with FP&A to track and manage reporting on clinical trials
- Prepare financial statements using complex Excel models as well as system exports for both cash and GAAP based reporting
- Prepare documentation to support annual audits from external auditors and tax team
- Research and provide recommendations on best practices for internal control processes and policies. In partnership with Senior Manager, Accounting, develop and maintain accounting procedure manual.
- Ensure that vendor bills and payments are processed timely, accurately, and in accordance with company policies and procedures
- Primary contact for accounts receivable and assist Senior Manager, Accounting, with treasury/investment management
- Serve as owner of document retention policy and assist with document retention best practices
- Assist in review of new contracts & transactions including researching technical guidance
- Support ERP system implementation as necessary
- Ad hoc/special projects as necessary
Who You Are
- BA/BS degree in accounting
- CPA license preferred but not required
- Minimum 3 years relevant professional experience, including experience in a public company or Big-4 accounting firm
- Knowledge of US GAAP
- Biotech, software, or healthcare industry experience is highly desired.
- Proficient in Excel
- SOX 404 experience is highly desired
- Strong interpersonal communication skills required
- Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, exciting environment
