SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Director of Shelter Operations, the Behavior and Rescue Manager is responsible for the behavioral care and well-being of our Pets In Need (PIN) animals from arrival at the shelter as well as coordinating transferring animals into and from other rescue groups/organizations and between PIN shelter locations. This includes but is not limited to training plans, coordinating enrichment (including socialization plans and dog play groups), volunteer training and management, post adoption consultations, and working with local and statewide rescue and animal care organizations to best utilize the resources of PIN in cooperation with our rescue community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Designs and implements individualized training and/or socialization plans for animals residing in the facility and/or foster care; creates and measures training plans and provides clear written and verbal communication to volunteers and staff.

Monitors and evaluates the behavior of animals in the facility and/or foster care and works to improve behavior and mental health of all PIN animals.

Creates and implements behavior modification plans in collaboration with PIN DVMs and/or Veterinary Behaviorist.

Manages general training of facility staff and volunteers on animal behavior and handling.

Trains and directly manages all advanced (blue) volunteers.

Coordinates with the operations team to identify animals that would benefit from additional training post adoption, and creates specialized contracts, waivers and Behavior Plans for adopters.

Coordinates post-adoption follow-up for adopters of dogs and cats who have behavior plans, including referrals and advice; coordinates in-shelter and in-home consultations with adopters when needed.

Provides written summary reports on animal behavior, assessments, and training.

Coordinates all incoming and/or outgoing rescue movement and ensures animals are transported in as low stress conditions as possible.

Develop and implement transport and behavior protocols that satisfy both industry best practices and Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) guidelines.

Manage transportation requests for PIN animals between shelter locations.

Participates in the PIN Quality of Life Committee and creates/updates all behavior and rescue protocols as needed.

Recruit, hire and manage behavior staff.

Manages behavior department supplies, including inventory, ordering and storage.

Manages Behavior and Rescue department budget.

Performs other job duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education in animal behavior or related field required; Bachelor's degree in related field highly desirable.

Experience working in an animal shelter highly desired, but not required.

Related Experience as demonstrated by up to 3 years of work with canines and some level of experience with felines.

Dog training certification (CPDT, KPA-CTP or CTC highly desirable (or ability/willingness to obtain certification within 6 – 9 months of hire).

Prior experience supervising staff required.

Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and shelter databases.

Maintains knowledge of current training methods and new best practices.

Must have strong attention to detail and strong organizational/collaboration skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact effectively with clients, staff and external partners.

Be self-sufficient and perform well with minimal supervision; good judgement required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
-
This position is considered moderately to highly physical and requires a lot of standing, bending, lifting, and walking.

Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, push and pull, ascend/descend stairs, reach and lift overhead 20 lbs., climb on ladders, and lift up to 50lbs.

Comfortable handling and managing large dogs up to 100 lbs.

Ability to see, hear, and speak.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Works remotely, on-site, and outdoors in various settings and weather within the community.
