SUMMARY 

The Foster Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the population of foster animals at both PIN locations, communicating with foster parents, and assisting in the creation of training materials and husbandry presentations. The Foster Coordinator responds to foster questions and concerns, processes foster placements, and organizes all data associated with the foster program. Foster staff are expected to work closely with adoptions, medical, and behavior teams to address new and existing concerns with foster animals and coordinate appointments, as needed. Foster staff are expected to track the medical and behavior needs of all foster animals and provide data to effectively determine pathway planning with the Foster and Animal Care Manager.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES 

  • Recruits, educates, and onboards all new foster parents. 

  • Identifies animals in need of foster placement and composes requests for foster animals through email and social media outlets. 

  • Coordinates the departure and return of all foster animals, monitors supply requests and medication refills. 

  • Serves as the liaison between foster parents, and medical and behavior teams, to provide foster animals with high quality care. 

  • Always communicates with staff and foster parents with respect and compassion. 

  • Makes appropriate matches of animals and foster parents through introduction with resident pets, if possible, and provides all data known to PIN about the foster animals for placement. 

  • Tracks all data related to foster animals, including foster parent communications, length-of-stay in foster, behaviors in shelter and in foster homes, as well as final outcomes. 

  • Maintains the population of PIN foster parents so there is clarity among the team about who to contact for the different populations of animals needing foster placement. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATONS 

  • Associate degree or equivalent and 2 years of animal handling experience or a combination of education and experience. 

  • Prior work experience with and care of animals, dogs, and cats desired, other species, veterinary and/or behavior experience a plus. 

  • Ability to handle dogs of all sizes and experience working with fearful or fractious animals, with a focus on canines and felines. 

  • Must have strong attention to detail and strong organizational skills. 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 

  • Strong and effective interpersonal and customer service skills. 

  • Must be flexible and able to work effectively without supervision. 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. 

  • Experience with Chameleon Software, ASM or other sheltering software preferred. 

  • Must have strong time management skills and be comfortable meeting tight deadlines and multitasking. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Previous experience with volunteer program management, or a similar position in an animal shelter or other animal welfare organization. 

  • Demonstrated experience working with volunteers in a community-service based field, such as education, parks, social work, animal welfare or a related field. 

  • Demonstrated experience handling cats and dogs in a positive way. 

  • Knowledge of best practices in lifesaving and progressive animal welfare. 

  • Understands and utilizes positive reinforcement and Fear Free Sheltering. 

  • Understanding of canine and feline behavior. 

  • Experience with the care of underage animals of different species, with a focus on canines and felines. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Perform desk-based computer tasks. 

  • Frequently sitting. 

  • Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds. 

  • Occasionally twist/bend, squat, kneel/crawl.  

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Must be available to work weekends, with flexible hours, including evenings and holidays. 

  • May work remotely, on-site, or outdoors in various settings and weather conditions within the community. 

  • Ability to travel between, and work, at both PIN locations. 

  • Working with potentially dangerous and fractious animals.
