The 163rd Street Improvement Council empowers individuals and families including veterans, the formerly incarcerated, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and those with physical, cognitive, or developmental challenges by providing housing and connecting them to the resources, support, and opportunities needed to transition from homelessness to stable, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
History
Founded in 1966, the 163rd Street Improvement Council, Inc., was established to address the chronic, systemic lack of resources in the South Bronx. As pioneers in housing justice in the Bronx, we began by developing affordable housing for some of our most vulnerable Bronx residents.
Today, we are a tenant-centered organization driven by our core values of Strength, Support, and Stability. We offer a continuum of care from transitional housing to congregate living designed to promote dignity, foster independence, and support long-term stability for those we serve.
The Role
Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the Residential Aide is responsible for creating and ensuring a safe, caring and supportive community environment for our shelter residents. This RA/School Liaison position involves working closely with residents to maintain school attendance records for all youth enrolled in school, communicate with DOE and school officials to provide verification of children’s absence and reasoning. Also, provide emotional and physical support while addressing resident’s immediate needs with day to day tasks.
Specific Requirements:
This is a full-time shift position. Staff may be asked to adjust their work schedule depending on the operational needs of the site.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Complete intakes for new clients and provide orientation to the facility, it’s protocols, as well as DHS rules and regulations.

Collect and make copies of client identification and other documents necessary during initial intake.

Maintain required written documentation of case records, utilize and navigate the computer database (CARES) to update client’s records in accordance with governmental and agency policy.

Perform weekly unit inspections to ensure compliance and safety of residents from banned items and substances.

Perform hourly facility inspections to ensure safety and adherence to shelter protocols.

Engage with residents while also monitoring daily on-site activities; as well as reporting and documenting any incidents to supervisory, case management and clinical staff.

Standard: Facility “rounds” are completed on an hourly basis.

Standard: Incidents and subsequent reports need to be documented and submitted on the day of the occurrence.

Assist residents while performing tasks working in community areas, and cafeteria; serving clients during mealtimes at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Assist in the planning and organization of recreational activities, events and outings.

Assist residents with receiving personal care items, clothing, Metro Cards or providing transportation when available and/or required.

Maintain inventory of food and dry goods.

Standard: Document the quantities in the Food Intake binder daily.

Standard: Document the temperature of freezers, refrigerators and monitor food quality daily.

Attend and participate in all required agency trainings and meetings. Monthly staff and community meetings, also in-service and online LMS trainings.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Residential Aide Supervisor or other supervisory staff.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:

High School Diploma, GED or HSE required. Bachelor's degree in human services or related field is preferred.

1+ year experience working in the field of social service, housing, or emergency shelters.

Bi-lingual; Ability to speak fluent English/Spanish REQUIRED.

Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.

Must possess strong organizational, writing, communication, and computer skills.

Proficiency is MS and Google Suite preferred

F-80 Fire Safety Coordinator certification or ability to obtain in 3 months of hire is not required but encouraged.

NYC Food Handlers Certificate or ability to obtain in 3 months of hire is REQUIRED.
-
CPR certification is not required but encouraged.
Compensation:
A competitive salary, incentive and benefits will be offered, commensurate with the role and the final candidate’s experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Working Environment:
This position will be held in an Emergency Family Shelter facility with a business casual dress code and professional conduct expectations. A staff member will utilize standard security equipment/measures like walkie-talkies, security wands and bag checks. As well as incorporating common office practices and equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and document filing. This position is subject to travel.
