Over the past few years, we have experienced significant growth.  As we grow, we are seeking to build our core leadership team, in anticipation of a bold new chapter. We will continue to expand our core Write to Change the World workshops in cities across the nation (and the globe), and we are also seeking to organize and coordinate our flagship Public Voices Fellowship initiative into a powerful new force to change the cultural narrative on a large scale, with permanent and undeniable impact.


The OpEd Project is seeking a visionary, can-do, experienced manager with a track record of success. The ideal candidate will have an aptitude for client management and a demonstrated ability to support and grow a significant portfolio of programs valued at $1.2 million. 

The Senior Program Manager will work at the intersection of social justice, academia, the foundation community, and journalism. Reporting to the Director of Fellowships, the Senior Program Manager will support and grow a portfolio of 15 to 20 Public Voice Fellowships, which are year-long programs comprising 200 to 300 Fellows per year valued at $1.2 million. The Senior Program Manager will directly manage approximately three of the most intensive Fellowships and will work with the Director of Fellowships to develop and oversee a small and mighty team of Program Managers to manage the rest. They will design and/or improve existing systems to ensure full and meaningful processes, reporting, and learning, with a focus on driving successful outcomes. Our team of program managers is the connective tissue that grounds and guides our team of working journalists, coaches, and thought leaders across the nation.   • Manage all people, place and training-related logistics and execution for three to five Public Voices fellowship programs each year, along an agreed upon timeline

  • Support teams of best-in-class journalist coaches as they deliver programming at our Public Voices Fellowship programs

  • Track progress and document impact and stories of transformation from your Fellowship programs

  • Join and occasionally lead weekly and monthly planning and reporting calls with fellowship coaches, other program managers and our larger team


  • In partnership with the Director of Fellowships, work to streamline processes, communication, and other components of the complete fellowship portfolio in order to achieve maximum efficiency and scale.

  • Partner with other program managers on the Fellowships team to share and document learnings that can be applied broadly across the portfolio.


  • Oversee and grow communities of underrepresented thought leaders in fellowships in your portfolio

  • Create meaningful partnerships within communities around our fellowships, that lead to growth and action

  • Amplify impact of programs under your management via social media

  • Support, evaluate, and coordinate the efforts of journalists on your fellowship teams

  • Provide support to our public and private workshop team as needed, by communicating broadly about such opportunities within our fellowship community

  • Passionately represent OpEd Project at events, conferences and talks

  • 5-7 years of prior work experience, preferably in a job with significant project management.

  • Proven track record of making things happen (for example, managing or better yet launching a project or event with multiple moving parts and people, that required you to drive demand, interact with customers, speakers, and clients, and handle logistics and operations).

  • A keen eye for spotting and implementing opportunities for improvement 

  • Resourceful, "no excuses" attitude (able to see what needs to happen, finds a way to make it happen)

  • Strong analytical skills (ability to assess and translate information into next steps)

  • Nimble and driven – can identify problems and solutions quickly

  • Excellent judgment – knows when to act and when to consult + seek permission before acting

  • Extremely organized, impeccable attention to detail

  • Warm, authentic and deeply collaborative communication style

  • Tech-savvy- able to introduce and use technology for greater efficiency and improved collaboration

  • Demonstrated aptitude (or desire to learn/use) Twitter and other social media,  Note: we do not expect the Senior Program Manager to play a main role in our social media, which is overseen by our Social Media Associate; however the Senior Managers are expected to use social media, especially Twitter, on a regular (at least weekly) basis to track impact, strengthen our network of fellows, and demonstrate thought leadership around key ideas and events as they relate to our mission and the fellowship portfolio.

  • Prior experience supervising direct reports and indirect reports preferred
