OPPORTUNITY

Hot Bread Kitchen is seeking a Kitchen Assistant for a unique opportunity to support the launch of a series of 20-hour culinary trainings that focus on plant-based cooking. This program was created in partnership with the NYC Mayor’s Office and is designed to upskill municipal food workers on creating nutritious and delicious plant-based meals for their respective agencies. Hot Bread Kitchen has been a leader in culinary training for the past 16 years and this program furthers our impact within New York City’s food ecosystem.

 

The Plant-Based Training Program will take place at the NYC Department of Corrections’ kitchen facilities on Rikers Island. The Kitchen Assistant will work with the Lead Culinary Instructor in executing our hands-on culinary training program and is  responsible for the setup, execution, and clean up of the kitchen during training. They will be responsible for setting up each training activity or task in alignment with the Hot Bread Kitchen curricula. The pace of this role is fast-moving and requires the ability to arrive on-time and follow directions. The ideal candidate for this role is someone who has an interest in the culinary arts and an enthusiasm for plant-based cooking.

 

Hours, Cohort Size, Location and Schedule

The Kitchen Assistant position will be a part-time, temporary role that requires in-person availability. This position will require up to 20 hours per week for one 11-week period, including overnight hours for 6 of the 11 weeks. There is the potential to work at future cohorts as they are planned in the future.  Details as follows:

 

Location: Rikers Island, East Elmhurst, NY

Training/Preparation Day(s): August 26  and/or August 27, 2024  (Monday and/or Tuesday); Hours and location may vary

 

COHORTS 1 & 2

Dates: September 3, 2024 - October 3, 2024 (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Work Hours: 9:30am - 7:30pm 

 

COHORTS 3 & 4

Dates: October 8, 2024 - November 12, 2024 (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Work Hours: 3:30am - 1:00pm 

 

Estimated Hours Per Week: 20, including 8 instructional hours per week, plus additional time for set-up, reset between cohorts, meal break, and end-of-day clean up.

 

General Responsibilities:

  • Program Support and Education:

    • Provide hands-on, in-person kitchen support to the Lead Culinary Instructor during the program.

    • Record daily attendance and monitor uniform compliance.

    • Facilitate kitchen set up and clean up.

    • Track inventory of ingredients and supplies for training.

    • Work 1:1 with trainees to provide educational and technical support with program content.

    • Provide educational and administrative support during training.

Reporting Lines:  This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Culinary Workforce Development Programs and is supervised by the Lead Culinary Instructor during training hours.  

 

Qualifications:

  • Passion for Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural and economic backgrounds.

  • Must have a minimum of 1 year experience in professional kitchens/production environments.

  • Must be extremely organized and attentive to detail.

Compensation:

This is a part-time temporary position and the salary is $28 per hour for daytime shifts and $36 for overnight shifts.

A travel stipend will be provided during overnight hour work shifts.

 

Location and Hours:

This position requires regular in-person attendance at the NYC Department of Corrections’ kitchen facilities at Rikers Island as well as Hot Bread Kitchen’s facility in Chelsea Market. This position is estimated to require up to 20 hours per week for one 11-week period, beginning the week of August 26; working hours will call for daytime and overnight hours (Cohorts 1 & 2: 9:30am - 7:30pm; Cohorts 3 & 4: 3:30am - 1pm). We follow New York City and State guidelines on COVID-19 vaccination and masking.
