OPPORTUNITY

Hot Bread Kitchen is seeking a Substitute Culinary Instructor to facilitate the delivery of our workforce training programs on an as-needed basis to provide temporary support for our culinary team. Our hands-on kitchen training programs range from 5 to 8 weeks per cohort with up to 30 members per cohort. Our programs are designed to prepare participants for entry-level jobs in the culinary industry. The ideal candidate for this instructional role is someone who has a background in the restaurant industry and in culinary education and is interested in temporary assignments (ranging from 1 day to 2 or more weeks) throughout the year. They should also possess exemplary culinary skills, patience and the ability to effectively convey cooking knowledge to members with varying skill levels. This role would be working alongside an instructional team of one to two other staff.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Kitchen Preparation 

    • Review curriculum and recipes to plan for instruction.

    • Manage all relevant preparation activities, including readying the kitchen, preparing ingredients and demonstrations and organizing kitchen equipment.

  • Kitchen Instruction 

    • Facilitate the established curriculum with other culinary instructional staff ensuring that planned recipes and techniques are taught effectively.

    • Provide demonstrations of cooking techniques and clear and concise instructions to members.

    • Teach and enforce proper safety and sanitation practices in the kitchen.

    • Supervise members during cooking and provide hands-on feedback and assessment of members.

    • Work 1:1 with members to provide skills and technical support.

    • Oversee the clean up and preparation for the following day of training, including storage of leftover ingredients, organization of equipment and kitchen sanitation.

    • Communicate with Hot Bread Kitchen Program staff about member issues/concerns as well as member successes.

  • Program Management and Administration

  • Participate in case conferences about members, as needed.

  • Complete weekly member assessment surveys, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Passion for Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission 

  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural and economic backgrounds

  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in a restaurant kitchen working as a cook

  • A minimum of 1 year teaching/training experience in a culinary setting

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and counsel people 

  • Extremely organized and attentive to detail 

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and interpersonal skills 

  • General computer proficiency

LOCATION AND HOURS

This position requires in-person attendance at our facility in Chelsea Market or at one of our outpost locations. Hours and days will vary depending on the program’s need for coverage. We follow New York City and State guidelines on COVID-19 vaccination and masking.

COMPENSATION

Hourly compensation $55-$65/hour
