Starburst is seeking a Product Manager for the Federation Engine team at Starburst. The Federation Team is responsible for developing the highly parallel and distributed Presto query engine that can securely access data from a single or multiple systems within the same query. We are constantly working to improve performance, scalability, security, and access to data sources. As a Product Manager for the Federation Engine team you will own the entire product management process including requirements gathering and defining, driving development and successful releases. You will work with engineering, release management, product management, sales, marketing, and partners for product success.
We are the Presto company. Starburst engineering team is the major contributor to Presto, a dominant open source distributed SQL query engine. Presto was originally created and open-sourced by Facebook under the Apache 2 License. Today Presto is the fastest growing SQL engine driven by a broad community of users ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small nonprofits. Our team consists of experts who have been advancing Presto by committing to it since the very start of the project.
Role Responsibilities
Entrepreneurial ownership of the product; when asked for faster horses, envision and create the combustible engine
Own the product management process for the Federation Engine
Engage with customers and partners, gather requirements
Develop product strategy and product roadmaps
Create and design feature requirements and success criteria; collaborate with engineering during development
Coordinate with engineering to drive the development
Lead the prioritization and development of (but not limited to)
Performance improvements of query read / write capabilities; including caching
All aspects of security within Presto
Connectors to data sources from Presto
Presto as a Data Lake; including cataloging
General Usability of Presto
Develop a strong understanding of customer use cases and identify patterns to incorporate into product strategy and roadmap
Collaborate with other product managers, field team, support team, and engineers for input to the product roadmap
Create and use a data driven approach to product
Drive end user documentation, internal documentation, and field enablement for features developed by the Federation Engine team
Collaborate with teams globally across multiple time zones and operate in an Agile development environment
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or equivalent field
5+ years of software engineering experience
Excellent verbal and written communication
Expert knowledge and experience writing SQL queries
Understanding of data warehousing and data lakes
Knowledge of Presto and adjacent open source technologies such as Apache Spark, Apache Drill, Apache Druid, Apache Pinot
Knowledge of competitive landscape
