Lead Product Formulator
Full Time

Overview:
Lead the research, formulation, refinement and testing of complex product formulations for a leading nutraceutical company.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Research current products with related goals and all of the ingredients used. Research pharmaceutical medicines and other synthetic chemicals with known related effects; understand the mechanisms through which they operate.
  • Create and maintain a chemical database of all the possible ingredients that could be used in any of our formulations, with all the relevant info on each (active compounds, primary and secondary mechanisms of action, contraindications, dose ranges, safety data, molecular structure, links to research, etc.)
  • Develop product hypothesis for new products that include the mechanisms and pathways we are seeking to target, and proposed ingredients that might appropriately affect those pathways, supported by good research. Work with our medical and scientific advisors to develop the hypothesis and testing process.
  • Conduct full literature review on all ingredients, factoring safety, efficacy, interactions, delivery needs, half life, etc.
  • Research the difference between various forms of the same nutrient, plants with similar mechanisms of action, active ingredient extraction and standardization processes, etc. Research and decide on ingredient sourcing.
  • Research and decide on necessary inactive ingredients for tableting, manufacturing, etc., aligned with the company’s philosophy and quality control standards.
  • Search for nutraceuticals that have similar mechanisms of action to pharmaceuticals/research chemicals.
  • Generate hypothesis regarding ingredient interactions and synergies, and processes to test the hypotheses.
  • Conduct internal trials to refine formulations.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Director, the head of Product Development, and CRO’s to create and run clinical trials.
  • Create and maintain safety data sheets for each product. Create and maintain relevant medical disclaimers and product labels.
  • Work with marketing and legal team to develop research supported claims for each product. Work with the content team to develop information and FAQs on each product.
  • Coordinate manufacturing team to create ingredient testing and product manufacturing protocols to meet our quality control standards.
  • Engage external resources as needed for food and flavor sciences, ingredient testing, stability/ shelf life testing, etc.
  • Reformulate factoring regulatory differences for different countries or change in regulations.
  • Research and experiment with improving delivery mechanisms for ingredients.
  • Assist creation of quantified self app to support our community in their own personalized optimization, and to provide us relevant bioinformatics
  • Curate non-ingestible neurotechnology based on literature review

Success Criteria:
Develop new products and versions that meet safety, efficacy, uniqueness and customer satisfaction objectives.
Meet agreed-upon timelines and annual objectives for number of new product launches.
Ensure product quality control standards.

Qualifications:
Experience formulating complex, high-end nutraceuticals.
Experience working with clinical trials.
Knowledge of current GMP guidelines.
Knowledge of dietary ingredient regulation.
Ability to interpret preferred methods of ingredient testing (HPLC, MS, etc.)and certificates of analysis, etc.
Graduate degree in related fields of science or equivalent relevant study.
Passion for these topics and this type of work.

Ideal:
Background in nutritional science, nutrigenomics, neurochemistry/ psychoneuropharmacology, herbalism, microbiomics, and integrative medicine.
Formulation experience for high end supplement companies.
Knowledge and deep interest in nootropics and cognitive chemistry.
Understanding of food science and capable of addressing organoleptic concerns.
Familiarity with advanced delivery systems.

Skills:
Ability to communicate and effectively collaborate with scientists and nonscientists.
Prior experience in formulating products for various foreign markets like EU, Japan, Australia, Canada, etc., preferred.
Ability to comprehend technical scientific publications and to conduct meta analysis/ structured review of the literature.
Ability to engage contributors and synthesize input from many sources.
Technical writing skills

Opportunity:
