Position overview
TLA is looking for a new member to join our dynamic and mission-focused organization as a Director. In this role, you will work as a key member of our team, ensuring TLA has strong organizational foundations upon which to grow and sustain our work. This position reports to TLA’s Chief Executive Officer and will work closely with our Chief of Staff.

Position location
TLA is a national, fully distributed, virtual organization. The Director can work from a location of their choosing. Occasional travel to team events will be required.

Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the organization’s finance function by:
  • Improving, maintaining, and executing strong financial processes, including:

- In partnership with CEO and Partners, development of and ongoing monitoring of operating and project budgets;

- Annual, monthly, and quarterly monitoring and reporting;

- Manage third-party bookkeeper and review financial data monthly to ensure accuracy of reporting;

- Expense guidelines development, processing, and monitoring;

- Consultant and vendor invoicing and payment;

- Cash flow monitoring and management; and,

- Grant monitoring and reporting.

  • Leading annual audit process (including review and selection of vendor).
  • Serving as member of TLA’s board Finance Committee, working with members to develop quarterly reports and other key board documents.
  • Liaising, problem-solving, and managing relationships with key outsourced finance partners, including bookkeepers, auditors, and consultants.

Manage key human resource functions, including:
  • Leading the relationship with TLA’s outsourced HR and payroll vendor.
  • In partnership with Chief of Staff, reviewing, improving, and updating employee onboarding and benefits procedures and processes.
  • Providing support to Chief of Staff for employee recruitment, hiring, and onboarding.

Ensuring solid company operations by:
  • Reviewing, negotiating, and monitoring vendor contracts.
  • Managing and selecting pro bono legal relationships.
  • Managing and reviewing outsourced providers (insurance, brokers, etc.).
  • Developing, improving, and execute TLA’s technology plan, including processes for purchasing, maintenance, and troubleshooting for employee devices and tools as well as relationships with project developers and technology platforms.

Supporting in other critical management areas, including:
  • Managing the central collection of internal and external data to allow TLA to evaluate programs, monitor performance and evaluate impact and consequently improve and/or develop plans.
  • Contributing to TLA’s fundraising and grant management by administering grant processes (e.g. agreement execution/acknowledgement, reporting, disbursements) and supporting grant writing as appropriate.

Skills and experience:
  • Experience and demonstrated impact in a finance and/or operations role, ideally in a related field (nonprofit, education, consulting, etc.).
  • Effective communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and coordinate effectively with multiple stakeholders.
  • Track record of taking initiative and working entrepreneurially.

  • Undergraduate degree and 5+ years professional experience.
