Foundation for SMFM is a 501(c)3 non-profit created to promote the career development of young investigators whose research will advance the field of maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) and improve the care of women with high-risk pregnancies. The first research scholarship was awarded in 1992, and in recent years the Foundation has expanded its award programs to include funding opportunities for current and future members of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) at various career stages and practice settings. The Foundation's programs offer opportunities to improve pregnancy outcomes through research and clinical training grants, global health initiatives, and mentoring the next generation of clinicians and scientists.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director is the key management leader of the Foundation for SMFM. The Executive Director works with and reports to the Foundation board as well as the SMFM CEO and staff to ensure that the Foundation’s mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and appropriate communications, develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the Foundation, oversees and implements the operations of the Foundation, and represents the Foundation to all constituents, including SMFM members, industry partners, other donors and nonprofits and the public.

 

Responsibilities:

Administrative


    Work closely with board chair and standing committee chairs to seek their     involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall     visibility of the organization.


    Supervise staff responsible for program management.

Oversee board and standing committee meetings and write and distribute minutes of such meetings

Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance the Foundation’s mission.

Plan, prepare and manage the annual budget.

Manage and maintain Foundation’s donor database and fundraising software.



Development

Develop fundraising plans and budgets in conjunction with the CEO, board chair and development committee chair, including annual goals, milestones and timelines.

Pursue sponsorships and unrestricted educational grants from industry partners and collaborate with SMFM senior staff on such endeavors.

Identify and pursue additional funding opportunities for the Foundation from sources within and outside the SMFM membership.

Sustain and expand the Corporate Council Program.

Plan and execute fundraising events at the SMFM Meeting and other occasions.

Launch and monitor annual and one-time fundraising initiatives with SMFM membership.

Plan and execute fundraising initiatives with non-member individual donors.

Develop and maintain donor recognition and gift acknowledgement program.

 

Communication


Effectively collaborate and communicate with SMFM staff and volunteer leadership regarding Foundation initiatives and activities.

Build and maintain relationships with existing sponsors and major donors.

Increase the visibility of the Foundation through SMFM channels and events that bring attention to the Foundation and its mission.

Utilize Foundation and SMFM publications to promote the Foundation’s mission, goals and accomplishments. 

Create collateral materials, including the Annual Report, materials for specific events or initiatives, and other promotional materials.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.

High level strategic thinking and planning.

Ability to effectively articulate the Foundation’s mission to Society members, prospective donors and industry partners.

Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors.

Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers.

Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.

Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting.

Strong project management skills.

Strong work ethic and interpersonal skills, and a high degree of energy.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, including negotiation skills.

Strong public speaking ability.

A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.

Active fundraising experience.

Ability to travel as required and to work flexible hours, including weekend hours on occasion for events.

 

Qualifications: 

 

BA/BS degree in relevant field required, master’s degree highly preferred.


Minimum of 7 years of experience in senior nonprofit management, fundraising, strategic planning, preferably related to women’s health. 


CFRE preferred, but not required. 

 

Supervision Given:

Direct supervision of the following roles: Program Manager and Scholars Program Coordinator


Supervision of vendor/consulting outsourced management services
