JOB TITLE: Youth Care Coordinator

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND:

The Hidden Genius Project is a non-profit headquartered in Oakland, California, that trains and mentors Black male youth in technology creation, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills to transform their lives and communities. The Hidden Genius Project seeks to reveal the true potential of Black male youth and transform their communities from the inside out. Through our student-centered, project-based approach, we invest in young Black men, give them access to technology training, and plug them into an ecosystem of innovation and empowerment. The Hidden Genius Project was founded in 2012 and established a full-time infrastructure in 2015. The organization now operates Intensive Immersion Programs in Oakland, Richmond, California, Los Angeles, and Detroit; in 2023, we will continue on our national growth trajectory, all as we look to regain our programming rhythm in the wake of ongoing public health challenges. As the program grows, The Hidden Genius Project seeks to impact thousands more Black males and young people in the coming years.

POSITION PURPOSE AND SUMMARY:

The Youth Care Coordinator will support Geniuses during their time in Intensive Immersion Programming, facilitate opportunities to strengthen the community with Geniuses and Alumni and support The Hidden Genius Project’s overall expansion efforts.

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Conduct weekly contacts with Geniuses who have “green care” huddle status. Attend weekly check-in meetings with the Support Services Manager to review outreach benchmarks and receive updates. 

  • Assist Geniuses with understanding and completing goals identified in their individual Care Plans. 

  •  Check-in with Geniuses following quarterly family meetings, orientations, and throughout the first year of Geniuses Intensive Immersion Program experience.  

  • Facilitation of Life Skills workshops on self-advocacy, study skills, job preparation, etc. • Follow-up to facilitate completion of the Genius Life Skills Assessment Test (GLSAT) with new Geniuses.  

  • Organize and support the implementation of community-building events, including game nights, movie nights, and family and Genius engagements.  

  • Support outreach efforts to secure Genius school transcript requests. • Provide outreach for College Information Nights, End of Summer Celebration, Open House events, etc.  

  • Send emails or phone calls to parents/caregivers to schedule quarterly meetings with the Support Services Manager. 

  • Complete Transition Letters for Geniuses who have successfully exited the Intensive Immersion Program as outlined on page 14 of the Support Services Practice Manual.  

  • Additional duties as assigned.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as an exceptional role model and mentor to The Hidden Genius Project participants.

  • Communicate effectively (via email, phone, and/or postal mail) and in a timely manner with all relevant constituencies, including participants and their parents/guardians.

  • Act as a dynamic ambassador to The Hidden Genius Project within the community.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Required

  • Participation and completion of the 15-month Hidden Genius Project Immersion Program  

  • Completion of a working final project from the 15-month Immersion program. 

  • Must be able to commit to training workshops before the start date and throughout employment. 

  • Enthusiasm for Youth Care Coordinator work and positive attitude.  

  • Patience and the willingness to adapt to various learning styles and respect for individual differences of individuals. 

  • Willingness to leave Deficit Model Ideologies at the door and adopt an Asset Model Ideology.

Desired

  • Strong time management and organizational skills 

  • Good communication skills  

  • Dependability in attendance, including all training sessions, debrief meetings, etc.  

  • Willingness to learn and grow. 

 

ROLE OVERVIEW: 

  • Role Location: (2*) Onsite -Richmond, CA

  • Reports to: Director of Curriculum and Instruction (headquarters based in Oakland, CA) or Site Senior Innovation and/or Innovation Educators (as applicable) 

  • Status: Non-Exempt (hourly employees)

  • Schedule: Part Time (maximum of 20 hours per week, in accordance with youths work permit)

COMPENSATION:

  • 22 hourly

  • Travel and supervise the transportation of students as needed
