As the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, GLAAD is at the forefront of accelerating acceptance to ensure fair, accurate, and inclusive representation that leads to cultural change. The work of GLAAD is a campaign-style work environment that operates on a breaking news cycle; there is always a high level of energy and rapid activity for everyone in the organization, preparing for the next events/activities to accomplish our important media advocacy work, challenging anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, and changing hearts and minds about our need for full equality. GLAAD operates with support from foundations, corporations, and individuals from every corner of the United States. Our highly skilled team of more than 60 staff works out of our Headquarters in New York, Los Angeles, and Remote Employees. 

 

The Opportunity

GLAAD’s internship program is a unique opportunity to contribute to the inner workings of a national leader in the fight for LGBTQ acceptance. The GLAAD Communications Intern will assist in GLAAD’s dynamic communications department across entertainment, news and rapid response, and internal departments. This role is part-time and will report to our Senior Communications Associate.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the GLAAD Media Awards, onsite and behind the scenes 

  • Create blogs and content to further GLAAD’s messaging and work in entertainment

  • Assist in crafting press releases, pitching to publications, and tracking earned media

  • Assist in building campaigns around pertinent LGBTQ issues, including transgender rights, LGBTQ youth, social media safety, and more

  • Assist the Social Media Safety Program team with data formatting for the annual Social Media Safety Index report

  • Performs all other related duties as assigned

  • This is a remote role, but if located in NYC, it will be hybrid and may, at times, function out of the NYC office location. 

  • Mandatory workshop sessions will be scheduled. Interns must attend these events. If they cannot participate, they should connect with their managers. 

Qualifications

  • Start Date: Tuesday, February 20th, End Date: Friday, May 31st

  • Interest in entertainment and the current cultural zeitgeist

  • A skilled writer and proficient with Google suite 

  • A quick thinker who is willing to adjust in response to the needs of the LGBTQ community and the news cycle

  • Professional demeanor and appearance

  • Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines, and desire to be a self-starter

  • Ability to work under pressure with tight turnaround

  • Inclusivity is a vital part of GLAAD’s work. The skills necessary to create a more diverse and inclusive environment are a plus. Strong commitment and passion for GLAAD’s mission and core values

  • Desire to learn skills and teach them to others 

  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 

  • Knowledgeable about LGBTQ media outlets

Education

  • The ideal candidate is anyone interested in working with us, an undergraduate/graduate student in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, digital media, or other related fields.

New Knowledge & Skills Intern Will Learn & Compensation 

  • Learn what goes into creating and building out the world’s most visible LGBTQ awards show 

  • See in real-time how rapid response is critical to safeguarding LGBTQ people and how the news cycle unfolds in general 

  • Make connections and see how pitching works, the nature of PR, and how press relationships are made 

  • An overall stipend of approximately $6K for 30 hours or $5K for 20 hours and a possibility of hybrid in-person workdays if based in NYC
