THE OPPORTUNITY 

Reporting to the Senior Director of Communities of Color and Media within the GLAAD Media Institute (GMI), the Associate, Communities of Color is responsible for implementing GLAAD's goals for promoting visibility and understanding among Communities of Color through the media as a means to educate the public on the issues facing the community and accelerate acceptance. 

Working in partnership with the Senior Director and with the Associate Director, Communities of Color, the Associate, Communities of Color will help oversee the implementation and execution of advancing Black LGBTQ+ representation, visibility, and storylines entertainment while advancing people living with HIV in media to combat stigma, work towards making Hollywood more accessible and equitable for up-and-coming and emerging Black queer content creators, curate events and special programming, be a leading voice and consultant for the GMI department for Communities of Color, and train advocates, companies, organizations, and additional talent to accelerate acceptance. 

The Associate will assist with the Communities of Color programming, which includes grants funded initiatives that are aimed at reducing HIV stigma and accelerating acceptance of LGBTQ People of Color, with a particular emphasis on communities of African descent living in the U.S. South, the coordination and facilitation of GMI community trainings, and leveraging media influencers to create change.

Responsibilities 

The Associate, Communities of Color performs the following essential functions:

  • As a member of the GLAAD Media Institute, this person will help create and implement training on how to accurately build media stories about LGBTQ People of Color and issues affecting them.

  • Participate in training and consultations with the news and entertainment industries to help create authentic and accurate portrayals of LGBTQ people of color in content.

  • Work with the Senior Director, Communities of Color and Media to develop innovative programming to increase POC LGBTQ+ and people living with HIV storylines.

  • Assist with overseeing quarterly virtual and in-person events that build networking and professional development for Black queer content creators in media and entertainment.

  • Assist with managing an active Black LGBTQ+ Influencer list of potential talent for programming, social and in-person engagement, panels, Q&As, and consulting considerations.

  • Assist with maintaining relationships and build partnerships with activists and community leaders to advance LGBTQ acceptance among communities of color.

  • Assist with GMI media training to local advocates, organizations, and talent, while tracking training evaluation outcomes and collecting local storyteller profiles for future news considerations and placements.

  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining up-to-date information on entertainment projects (film, television, video games, etc.) of interest to communities of color.

  • Assist with developing press releases, event descriptions, articles, and op-eds relevant to GLAAD's work on issues relating to Communities of Color in collaboration with the Communications team.

  • Represent GLAAD at events, conferences, festivals, and other relevant opportunities

  • Complete other tasks as assigned. 

Qualifications 

The ideal candidate should possess the following experience, competencies, and personal qualities: 

Education & Experience: 

  • Required: At least one year of work within the LGBTQ and/or racial justice movements, news media, or in a communications-related field. 

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in media or communication studies, film or television studies, or public relations or qualified related field. 

  • Required: Excellent professional writing skills. 

  • Preferred: Understanding of historical and current issues concerning the representation of the LGBTQ community and Communities of Color in the media. 

  • Preferred: Experience in creating online content and blogs. 

  • Preferred: Experience in planning and implementing public and educational events. 

Competencies & Attributes: 

  • Commitment to DEIA - A strong commitment to ensuring that DEIA strategies are incorporated into all partnership development and event planning work and that diverse communities are fully represented in GLAAD’s work in these areas. 

  • Race & Equity - Recognition of the impact of structural racism on LGBTQ communities, such as racial disparities in access and outcomes and the need for LGBTQ organizations and movements to actively address these disparities. Committed to learning about and enhancing practices related to racial equity in this role,

  • Experience (professional or volunteer) working within an LGBTQ or racial justice organization.

Compensation 

A competitive salary commensurate with experience is $60,000-$69,000. Benefits include 403(b) retirement plan participation; escalating vacation beginning with 19 days plus holidays; and organization-paid health benefits, including medical, dental, vision, healthcare, and dependent options; flex spending accounts; and life and long-term disability insurance.
