GLAAD operates with support from foundations, corporations, and individuals from every corner of the United States. Our highly skilled team of more than 60 staff works out of our Headquarters in New York, Los Angeles, and remotely.
THE OPPORTUNITY
GLAAD is seeking a dynamic and driven Controller who reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for supervising and managing recording journal entries, preparing balance sheets, account analysis, accounts payable processing, audit supports, and managing to ensure the accuracy of the financial statements prepared for the month-end and year-end close processes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting and Budgeting

Knowledge of US GAAP and GAAS with progressive experience in managing complex non-profit organizations with multiple funding streams.

Develop a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure requirements of the organization.

Support various aspects of the accounting and reporting processes, including preparing monthly budgets versus actual reporting, grant reporting, and other management reports and dashboards as required.

Understand and strengthen internal controls as identified by the internal risk assessment.

Manage annual audit preparation and tax filings

Manage and maintain accounts payable processes, corporate credit card accounts, and related reconciliation.
Monthly Closing
- Lead timely month-end close process including bank and general ledger account reconciliations, accruals, and journal and payroll entries posting.

Manage accurate and timely month-end and year-end revenue reconciliation processes with the Development Team

Identify process improvement and identify and lead automation opportunities to drive positive changes across the organization.

Analyze and create required adjusting journal entries and related reclassifying entries.

Review and process all expense reports - analyze the data and explain variances.
Reporting

Prepare monthly analytical reports such as departmental expenses, payroll, employee expense reports, and revenue.

Support the preparation of year-end external audit and audit schedules and financial statement notes

Support financial planning and budgeting processes

Respond to inquiries from the Chief Financial Officer, and other staff regarding financial reporting and special reporting requests

Escalate possible risks and issues as necessary to Chief Financial Officer

Review daily/weekly cash requirements with executive leadership.

The ideal candidate should possess the following experience, competencies, and personal qualities:
EXPERIENCE | EDUCATION:

Master’s Degree in Accounting

Highly desired CPA/CMA

Significant non-profit accounting experience is required

10+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience
COMPETENCIES | PERSONAL QUALITIES

Solid understanding of generally accepted auditing standards and generally accepted accounting principles

Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end and year-end close process

Excellent accounting software user and administration skills. NetSuite and Nexonia experience a plus

Highly skilled in creating and maintaining spreadsheets

Responding quickly and accurately to internal and external requests

Compensation
A competitive salary commensurate with experience is $150,000-$175,000. Benefits include 403(b) retirement plan participation; escalating vacation beginning with 19 days plus holidays; and organization-paid health benefits, including medical, dental, vision, healthcare, and dependent options; flex spending accounts; and life and long-term disability insurance.
