Position: Corporate General Counsel
Reporting to: Chief Operations Officer

We are adding a General Counsel to our team to be the “backbone” of our business. You will ensure that Yardstik operates within the law at all times, offer counsel on legal issues, create an effective guardian of the organization and facilitate business strategies development. As the owner of compliance, you will ensure we are legally sound and limiting risk exposure. We will also be looking to you to be a contributing member to business strategy discussions. A background in tech or direct background check industry experience will be valued.

Essential Accountabilities:

  • Identify and evaluate business and legal risks and find creative ways to mitigate those risks while achieving business goals and pursuing opportunities to scale
  • Stay up-to-date on changing laws in consumer reporting, employment, and data privacy and regularly meet with cross-functional teams to provide proactive counseling and maintain alignment
  • Build scalable and effective processes for legal review in the product development lifecycle and develop strategies to scale legal support as the business grows
  • Develop guidelines and a framework for data privacy compliance
  • Work collaboratively with customers and partners to identify creative solutions for compliance with consumer reporting, privacy, and employment laws by leveraging Yardstik’s products
  • Provide creative legal guidance to R&D teams across a variety of subject matter areas
  • Serve as primary legal support for Yardstik products
  • Stay up to date on new legislation, industry enforcement, litigation trends, and employment best practices to develop proactive compliance programs aligned with our suite of products
  • Lead, advise and consult with outside counsel on escalated disputes, customer complaints, and legal claims

 

Your experience might look something like this:

  • JD from accredited U.S. law school; licensed in good standing with a state bar
  • 5+ years of product counseling, privacy, or comparable experience; in-house experience at a fast-paced technology company is strongly preferred
  • Experience designing product and privacy compliance programs, policies, and processes
  • Experience leveraging creative and strategic thinking to solve complex problems on a cross-functional basis
  • Experience dealing with FCRA, and specifically in the background screening industry preferred
  • Self-motivated team player who can identify and resolve legal and business issues efficiently, drive projects, and earn the confidence of partners across the business
