About the Position

The Senior Manager of Accounting is primarily responsible for performing various GL accounting functions within the department, supporting the CFO through process improvement initiatives for monthly and year-end close processes, and enhancing the Partnership’s grants management and accounting functions.  This position has the ability to lead the monthly and annual close process and work closely with the CFO on cash management and process improvement initiatives.  We are a nonprofit, so this role will support grants management and revenue recognition policies for the organization.  


The duties will cover all Downtown Denver Partnership (Partnership) non-profit and quasi-governmental corporate entities including Downtown Denver Partnership, Downtown Denver Business Improvement District, 14th Street General Improvement District, Denver Theatre District, Downtown Denver Events, Denver Civic Ventures, and Downtown Denver Inc. The Senior Manager will be closely partnered with the CFO and Partnership leadership to drive positive process and system enhancements for the organization.  Additionally, this role will oversee the accounts receivable and grants management functions staff, and execution; this role has one direct report. 


This position has ample opportunity to take on more responsibility and quickly develop into a controller-level position.  This position also supports many facets of the financial and administrative functions of the organization and may be asked to assist in budgeting, banking, cash management, insurance, or grants and contracts management.  


About the Job

  • Review and/or own monthly and year-end financial close entries and processes, including assigned journal entries, balance sheet account reconciliations, accruals, and overall maintenance of the operational management accounts.
  • Review daily transactions for accuracy and appropriate accounting treatment and reconcile various general ledger accounts as needed.
  • Participate in consolidations and intercompany transactions where applicable.
  • Support the CFO in building out an enhanced fixed asset system within Microsoft Great Plains.
  • Own fixed asset accounting for the organization.
  • Identify and resolve issues within allocation methodology entries or accruals.
  • Support the development of robust grants management processes to ensure operational efficiencies and compliance for government grants and other revenue sources.
  • Serve as the grants manager for Accounting by establishing procedures, setting up grant accounts and budgets, streamlining reporting, compliance and reviewing new contracts to ensure they align with our internal accounting policies.
  • Generate and monitor operational cash flows, identifying cash balance needs and transfer requirements ensuring the most effective use of funds as well as ensuring proper reporting for program managers as it relates to revenue recognition and cash.
  • Serve as the backup for A/P, A/R, bank reconciliation, and other accounting functions as needed.  
  • Participate in annual audits, including preparation of records and documents, preparation of information for annual tax returns by auditors. 
  • Assist the CFO in the development of consolidated annual budget and monthly forecast for multiple entities, and help maintain records for reserve spending and corporate management fee models.
  • Assist with the continuous development and maintenance of companywide accounting policies and procedures.
  • Perform administrator responsibilities for Microsoft Dynamics GP, Salesforce, and credit card/banking systems.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

About You

To be successful in this position, you need to have a strong understanding of accounting policies and procedures and the ability to take on a full-cycle accounting role, including monthly reconciliation and close duties.  We are looking for a strong accountant that is not afraid to dig into the details, but who is also looking to move into more of a controller-type position in the future. There is plenty of opportunity to develop your skills and leadership in this role. 

You should also possess the following attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or equivalent required (Accounting degree preferred)
  • 3-5 years minimum experience in a dynamic accounting role
  • Comprehensive understanding of GAAP 
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
  • Microsoft Great Plains experience is a major plus
  • Experience in non-profit and/or government finance and accounting processes also a major plus
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to solve complex issues 
  • Strong analytical skills and well-developed business acumen
  • Solid project management skills and the ability to multi-task and create processes from scratch
