Position Summary:

The Vice President, Leadership Giving (VPLG) will report the Chief Growth Officer and will collaborate with several other senior team leaders.   This individual will manage a portfolio of approximately 75-100 major gift donors ($10,000+) and lead/coach a team of fundraising professionals (inclusive of three Directors of Leadership Giving, Director of Donor Development and Director of Prospect Management & Research) to capture significant donor opportunities.  They will innovate strategies that align with PKDF mission priorities and play a significant role in the launch of the organization’s next comprehensive campaign.  

The VPLG is responsible for developing, implementing, and executing strategies that result in individual gifts over $10,000 and will be comfortable closing gifts and pledges over $1 million dollars. The successful candidate will be a seasoned nonprofit executive, proven major gifts fundraiser, experienced in planned/legacy giving, and successful coach/manager with the ability to direct their team in prospecting, portfolio management and moves management to secure gifts in support of the comprehensive campaign.  


Core Responsibilities:

  • To gain an understanding of Polycystic Kidney Disease and the mission of the PKD Foundation and be prepared to fully convey with donors/prospects.
  • Serves as leader and coach to Leadership Giving team, driving team excellence and transformational revenue growth. 
  • Mentors and provides strategic insight and professional development to team members.
  • Responsible for development and execution of strategies to achieve Leadership Giving budget in partnership with Chief Growth Officer.
  • Partner with organizational leaders and an outside consulting firm to implement and execute a multi-year comprehensive campaign.
  • Using a donor centric strategy, represents and delivers a consistent Leadership Giving program experience for prospects and donors.
  • Responsible for a portfolio of approximately 75-100 major gift donors with the potential to give $10,000+.
  • Within personal portfolio and as the Leadership Giving team leader, develops strategic plans for donors employing an understanding of research, comprehensive campaign strategy, and giving opportunities, while leveraging internal and external relationships.
  • Partners with Leadership Giving staff and staff partners across PKDF to ensure that key information and comprehensive strategies are in place for all prospects and donors of $10K+ in assigned portfolio.
  • Partners with the Chief Growth Officer to develop key performance indicators and manages individual and team achievement of KPIs over the course of the fiscal year; identifies and troubleshoots challenges to achieving KPIs in timely manner.
  • Enters current donor contact information and interactions in CRM (Salesforce) to share the donor progress in the moves management cycle.
  • Work with the Executive Leadership Team, and other members of the staff, to establish clear standards and processes for stewardship, donor, and institutional recognition.
  • Partner in the development, evaluation, and continuous improvement of policies and processes to meet national best practices while ensuring adherence to grant and restricted giving agreements.
  • Uses data driven practices and processes to build pipeline, increase revenue, and apply resources.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team and financial staff in the preparation of annual business plans and budgets, incorporating various fundraising projections into the budget of the organization.


Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10+ years of Leadership Giving and Donor Development experience, with at least 7 years in a direct, front facing fundraising role with a clear record of success.
  • Proven track record working with and fundraising at the six and seven figure level.
  • High level of experience with and understanding of major gift and comprehensive campaigns, and public and private foundations as well as legacy giving.

         People Management:

1.       5+ years of experience directly managing a team of leadership giving staff/major gift fundraising team or equivalent management experience.

2.       Proven track record of supervising, coaching, developing, leading, inspiring, and motivating staff. Strong desire to build high-performing team.

3.       Experience coordinating team members to develop scripts, discovery process, best practices, sharing expertise/training and guiding solution development.


         Communication & Relationship Building:

1.       Ability to understand and effectively communicate complex research about polycystic kidney disease and the PKD healthcare community.

2.       Strong capability to leverage relationships and negotiate agreements. Inspiring team player who can interface with all levels of staff and volunteers to develop, maintain, and utilize relationships.

3.       Ability to effectively manage donor engagements while recognizing and leveraging the expertise of the different resources and the importance of their contributions. 

4.       Experience building a case for support and communicating donor-specific value propositions.

5.       Superior active listening, observation, analytical and problem-solving skills.


         Professional Skills:

1.       Highly efficient in time management and meeting deadlines under pressure without sacrificing quality.

2.       Strong project management skills with the ability to multi-task and inspire people across the organization.

3.       Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong presentation delivery, ability to convey ideas, and provide effective instruction.

4.       Proficient in Salesforce or similar CRM system.

5.       Sound professional judgement and interpersonal skills as well as strong organizational abilities and attention to detail.

6.       Ability to exercise judgement and appropriately handle confidential matters and information.

7.       Familiarity of remote office setting including video communications and a virtual meeting schedule.

8.       Ability to collaborate effectively among highly diverse (geographically & professionally) team.


Travel Requirements:

  • Ability to travel (appx 25-30% of the time).
  • Occasional business travel will be required to the PKD Foundation office in Kansas City, Missouri. Employees residing outside of the Kansas City Metro must live within reasonable proximity to a major airport hub for required travel.
