Community Science Education Intern Fall 2024 

Description 

Gowanus Canal Conservancy is seeking three (3) interns to assist with our Community Science Water Quality program. Each intern will lead small groups of grade 5-12 students in hands-on education activities relating to water quality in the Gowanus Canal, help with set-up and clean-up for outdoor field trips, and assist in workshop facilitation for educators. Participating students investigate the Gowanus Canal’s water qualities, ways in which it relates to local ecology, and the major issues the waterway faces today in a 90 minute session. Students will learn how they can be stewards of the Gowanus Canal and other NYC waterways.  

 

Intern Role

  • Receive training in programmatic topics, Gowanus history, Canal ecology, water quality testing, and teaching best practices

  • Work with the GCC education team as a teaching assistant (informal teaching and hands-on activities)

  • Participate in team planning, training, program delivery, and reflection

Experience / Qualifications 

  • Some experience teaching students in informal, outdoor settings preferred but not required (desire, enthusiasm to learn is more important)

  • Background or demonstrated interest in Environmental Science or related field

  • Enjoys working outside, sometimes in variable weather conditions (may include cold, heat, rain, wind) 

  • Must be reliable, committed, responsible, and a clear and consistent communicator  

Physical Requirements

  • Work is mostly performed in the field. Intern will potentially experience weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow

  • Requires moderate physical exertion - lifting, pushing, and carrying, etc. 

  • Requires communicating information orally and in writing 

  • Ability to enter and work at the Lowlands Nursery, an industrial site with some uneven terrain (mulch, gravel) 


Compensation

This is a seasonal, part-time position paying $20 per hour for an average of 6 to 9 hours of work per week. This position starts September 10 and ends November 12, 2024. 

 

Schedule

Tuesday, September 10, Wednesday, September 11, and Thursday, September 12, 2024 from 9am - 2pm (training)  

September 16 - November 12, 2024. 6-12 hours/week, must be available Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This internship will total approximately 82 hours.
