COMMUNICATIONS & OUTREACH COORDINATOR

Position Description 

The Communications & Outreach Coordinator supports Gowanus Canal Conservancy’s (GCC’s) communications and outreach strategy to ensure that current and new stakeholders are consistently engaged and inspired by the organization’s mission and moved to action through strong organizational communications efforts. The Communications and Outreach Coordinator will report directly to the Communications & Outreach Senior Manager.

Position Responsibilities 

Implement Organizational Communications

  • Work with Communications & Outreach Senior Manager to develop and implement communications strategies and annual objectives within GCC’s strategic plan 

  • Draft text, develop graphics and create video about organizational programs to increase organizational presence and engagement across platforms and mediums, including:

    • Social media - Instagram and LinkedIn

    • Website

    • GCC e-newsletter (to general audience and to segmented thematic lists)

    • Digital and print flyers

  • Document organizational programs regularly through photo and video

  • Work with Communications & Outreach Senior Manager to streamline processes and communications templates

  • Track and report communications metrics

Support Special Communications Projects

  • Work with Communications & Outreach Senior Manager on assets for special publications such as the Annual Report and events such as the Annual Meeting

  • Contribute to the launch of a new website in calendar year 2026, including organizing assets, copy-editing, checking links and drafting text

  • Support communications about the proposed Gowanus BID 

  • Creation of branded merch and signage 

Maintain and Coordinate Communications for Sustainer Program

  • Work with Communications & Outreach Senior Manager and Development and Office Coordinator to manage list of GCC Sustainers, maintaining an up-to-date list of members that can be shared with staff including the Lowlands Nursery team

  • Manage ongoing administration related to Sustainer program including updating giving platform as needed 

  • Create consistent communications for Sustainers through email newsletters

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-4 years of related experience

  • Experience using social media platforms for organizational communications, including Instagram and LinkedIn

  • Experience using marketing platforms like Mailchimp

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, WordPress, Squarespace, Salesforce, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Video conferencing, Project Management softwares such as Asana

  • Experience with graphic design, photography and/or video production and editing

  • Tech savvy and interest and ability to learn new systems, software and troubleshoot

  • Interest in urban environmental issues, and ability to interpret technical content for diverse audiences

  • Excellent communication, presentation, writing and copy-editing skills

  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills, time and project management, and team player with ability to problem-solve and take initiative 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to talk, hear, sit, stand, and walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

  • Interest and ability to work outdoors in an urban environment in all weather conditions

  • Communicating information; reading and typing; using video conferencing

  • Ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 25 pounds.

Schedule

This is a part-time, seasonal position, 25-30 hours per week. Schedule will be coordinated with the candidate, and requires occasional evenings and regular Saturdays. GCC staff currently have the option of working from home or in the office for administrative work. A computer or other needed equipment will be provided if needed for work from home. The position will start in April 2026 and conclude in November 2026.

Compensation: $29-32/hour, based on experience.
