About Breakthrough Silicon Valley
Breakthrough Silicon Valley launches talented but underserved middle school students on the path to college, while at the same time inspiring high school and college students to become educators. While ambitious in our goals, BTSV works: a stunning 99% of BTSV graduates are accepted into four-year colleges and 74% of BTSV Teaching Fellows are inspired to pursue a career in education as a result of their summer experience.
BTSV’s tuition-free program provides year-round out of school time academic support, advising, and advocacy for a diverse group of talented students, most of whom come from under-resourced communities and are first in their family to go to college. Through our students-teaching-students model, BTSV also provides a consummate professional development experience in education by providing talented high school and college students the opportunity to design and teach classes under the direction of seasoned education professionals.
Located in San Jose, California, Breakthrough Silicon Valley is an affiliate of The Breakthrough Collaborative, a leading national service organization that acts as the national voice for 24 Breakthrough sites across the country.
The Position
Breakthrough Silicon Valley is looking for a Corporate & Community Engagement Manager who’s passionate about educational equity and BTSV’s mission, and who can communicate and collaborate with students, families, and external stakeholders to amplify our impact.
You engage in both high-level, strategic thinking, and in executing critical processes that drive the day-to-day development activities of the organization. You can switch between internal and external roles easily and frequently, as some days you are working diligently at your computer to track and analyze donor data, while another day you are recruiting corporate partners to host BTSV students on Career Exploration Day. You are a problem-solver who takes initiative, is highly organized, attentive to detail, and process-oriented. You understand that open communication and strong leadership are paramount, alongside an ambitious attitude and desire to drive continuous improvement within yourself and the BTSV team. You are comfortable using databases, CRMs, social media, email marketing tools, and creative software, and are always excited to add more technical skills to your toolkit.
The Corporate & Community Engagement Manager reports to the Sr. Director of Development.
Areas of Ownership
Community and Event Management (45%): Build and maintain relationships with volunteers and corporate social responsibility teams, with the aim of converting volunteers into donors. Collaborate with program staff to incorporate volunteers into BTSV student events (such as the annual resume writing workshop and Career Exploration Day) and facilitate mutually beneficial and meaningful student/volunteer interactions. Provide logistical support for BTSV’s fundraising events, especially the annual Are You Smarter Than a Breakthrough Student benefit, by managing ticket sales, interfacing with vendors, coordinating with event committees, and more. Shepherd Board members and donors at BTSV student events and program visits.
Development Operations (30%): Lead the management of BTSV’s Salesforce database, including gift processing and acknowledgements, building reports, and financial reconciliations.
External Communications (25%): Work with design consultants to create and disseminate high-quality, effective, and engaging video, print, and digital collateral to ensure that BTSV’s mission is consistently articulated across multiple channels in a compelling way.
What background and skills do you have?:
At least three to five years of related experience in nonprofit development, corporate or volunteer engagement, event planning, and/or marketing
Ability to quickly build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including students, volunteers, donors, and Board members
Proficiency with Salesforce or another similar CRM
Experience creating social media content that engages diverse audiences
Strong verbal and written communication skills and a tactful, diplomatic communication style
Ability to maintain confidentiality and always exhibit a high level of discretion
Demonstrated ability to prioritize and execute multiple time-sensitive priorities with precision and integrity
“Breakthrough Spirit”: You’re a collaborative team player who is committed to excellence and open-minded, demonstrates a growth mindset, thinks creatively to solve problems, and works with a sense of humor and humility.
Commitment to Breakthrough Silicon Valley’s mission and goals as well as a passion for educational equity
Bonus points if you’ve got:
Experience at a nonprofit youth development or educational organization, particularly one focused on college access for first-generation students and students of color
Experience with website content management systems (e.g., SquareSpace) and email marketing tools (e.g., Mailchimp)
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, or similar design tools
Comfort with basic photo and video editing
You’re bilingual (Spanish or Vietnamese)
We know that many strong candidates will not have all the skills we list. That’s OK. What else do you bring to the table? Please tell us!
Compensation and Benefits
This is a full-time, exempt position. The salary range for this position is $65,000-$80,000. BTSV typically makes salary offers between the range minimum and the range midpoint, taking into consideration the candidate’s qualifications, our budget, and internal equity.
Health benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage, with 100% of employee premiums and 50% of dependent premiums covered by BTSV
Retirement Benefits: 401(k) plan with immediate, fully vested 3% company match
Paid time off: 15 days of PTO, plus 11 holidays and two “shut-down” weeks
Professional development fund for professional growth and learning opportunities
Interested in the position but don’t yet have three to five years of experience? We’ll also consider candidates with less experience for a Coordinator-level position, with a salary range of $55,000-$65,000.
Location and Hours
This is a hybrid position. You will have the flexibility to regularly work from a home office; however, this role requires attendance at meetings at BTSV’s main office at Herbert Hoover Middle School (1635 Park Ave, San Jose, CA 95126) and occasional travel to BTSV’s program sites and events in the San Jose area, so candidates must be local to the Bay Area in order to be considered. Occasional evening and weekend work is also required.
COVID-19 Information
BTSV requires all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 (one dose of Johnson & Johnson, two doses of Moderna, or two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech). Proof of vaccination must be provided prior to your first day of employment. Employees may request accommodation if they have a qualifying medical condition or on the basis of sincerely held religious beliefs and practices.
BTSV is also continually monitoring the COVID-19 situation locally and will continue to comply with all state, county, city, and/or school district directives on PPE, social distancing, vaccination, and remote work as they evolve.
