Organization Overview

Breakthrough Silicon Valley’s transformative two-pronged program launches talented but underserved middle school students on the path to college, while at the same time inspiring high school and college students to become educators, particularly in the communities that need the most help. Breakthrough Silicon Valley (BSV) stands out among the many efforts to improve educational outcomes for underserved students, reaching beyond the typical goals of proficiency and deeply changing the lives of individuals and their communities. While ambitious in its goals, BSV works: thanks to their experience with BSV, an incredible 99% of our graduates are accepted to four-year colleges and 88% of our Teaching Fellows (2017) are more interested in an education career.


Position Overview

The Breakthrough Leadership Program was founded to develop the next generation of leaders in education through a hands-on, impactful undergraduate experience in a highly effective nonprofit organization. The intern will develop leadership and project management skills in the education and nonprofit sector while making a meaningful impact in the educational outcomes of underserved students in Silicon Valley. Over four weeks, the intern will work with a dynamic, experienced staff to implement a variety of projects in our 9th grade summer program.

Position Requirements

  • College graduate or current college undergraduate with strong academic standing (3.0 GPA or above)
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement events with attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Drive and Gmail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to professionally gather and distribute information
  • Available Monday – Friday
  • Reliable access to transportation
  • Bilingual; fluent in Spanish

  • Accountable and mature; organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong work ethic, persistence and creativity in meeting goals
  • Self-motivated; takes initiative and works independently
  • Demonstrated integrity and honesty, with a focus on students’ best interests
  • High level of comfort reinforcing community norms / expectations and communicating related issues to appropriate personnel for the safety of all
  • Ability to work in environments and communities with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Prior experience in Breakthrough or other similar environments
  • Prior experience working with middle or high school students
  • Flexible with a can-do attitude; willing to support where-needed



Responsibilities:

  • Organize program-wide events and manage team members to implement fields trips and enrichment activities
  • Collect and maintain student outcome data (e.g. attendance, academic progress, behavior) and compile reports for administrative team using Microsoft Office
  • Work with academic team to administer student testing and analyze performance data
  • Publish weekly newsletters and other communication documents for Breakthrough families
  • Answer phone calls and communicate with students’ parents in a timely manner
  • Assist in monitoring students’ safety and activities
  • Prepare and coordinate mealtimes for students (set-up, food distribution, and cleanup)
  • Develop relationships with students to foster and encourage educational growth
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of classrooms and Breakthrough staff rooms



Stipend

This is an unpaid internship. A stipend of $2,250 will be paid to the intern to offset living expenses for the duration of their internship. 



Time Commitment*

  • BLP Orientation: June 10th – June 14th (tentative)
  • Teaching Fellow Orientation: June 17th – June 24th, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm daily
  • Summer Program: June 25th – July 19th, 7:30 am – 5:00 pm daily
  • Wrap-up Week: July 22nd – July 26th, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm daily
