Breakthrough Silicon Valley

Summer 2019

Summer Site Coordinator

Deadline to Apply: Open Immediately, applications reviewed on a rolling basis until position filled

Organization Overview

Breakthrough Silicon Valley (BSV) – a member of the national service organization Breakthrough Collaborative – is a successful college access and teacher training program. BSV offers six years of academic enrichment and college preparation to middle school and high school students with high potential but limited opportunities. Simultaneously, BSV recruits, trains, and inspires a diverse cohort of talented, high-achieving high school and college students to become the next generation of teaches. Using a Students Teaching Students model, BSV provides engaging, tuition-free academic programming during the summer and after school. Our students gain the skills and motivation to succeed in rigorous high school courses and, ultimately, in college. Meanwhile, our teachers gain hands-on experience, research-based training, and coaching from professional educators.

BSV is proud to report outstanding results. 100% of our students enroll in college-preparatory program and high schools, and more than 85% have GPAs of 3.0 and above throughout middle and high school. Furthermore, 96% of our graduates are attending four-year universities, and 78% of teacher alumni pursue careers in education upon college graduation.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Summer Site Coordinator plays an instrumental role in supporting the success of Breakthrough’s nationally recognized Middle School summer program. This six-week program for our incoming 7th and 8th grade students seeks to introduce and develop the core behaviors, values, and skills the rest of our six-year program reinforces. Through our students-teaching students model, Breakthrough students have the opportunity to learn from near-peer mentors and role models, who serve as teachers both inside and outside of the classroom. Our summer program is a unique hybrid of summer school and summer camp, where students get to take rigorous academic classes and participate in activities that develop college-going behaviors and mindsets, all in an environment that promotes the idea that learning is fun and it’s “cool to be smart.”
