About Breakthrough Silicon Valley

Breakthrough Silicon Valley launches talented students who have been historically excluded from higher education on the path to college, and inspires high school and college students to become the next generation of leaders, advocates, and educators. BTSV’s seven-year college access and success program, which supports students from 7th grade through their first year of college, has proven to be effective in preparing these students for college: a stunning 99% of BTSV graduates attend college immediately after high school.

BTSV’s tuition-free program provides year-round out-of-school time academic support, counseling, and advocacy for a diverse group of talented students, most of whom come from under-resourced communities and will be the first generation in their family to go to college. Through our students-teaching-students model, BTSV also provides a consummate professional development experience providing talented high school and college students the opportunity to understand the K-12 system and the drivers of educational inequities, and to design and teach classes under the direction of seasoned educators.

Located in San Jose, California, Breakthrough Silicon Valley is an affiliate of The Breakthrough Collaborative, a leading national service organization that acts as the national voice for 25 Breakthrough sites across the country.

The Position

We are seeking highly effective professional teachers to serve as Instructional Coaches (IC) for Summer 2025. IC’s are at the core of our summer program and play a crucial role by training, supervising, and supporting BTSV Teaching Fellows in becoming effective instructors and leaders. IC’s observe, articulate, refine, and improve the techniques of aspiring teachers in a collaborative environment, and as a result, get the opportunity to reflect upon and evaluate their own pedagogical practices.

Rather than teaching students directly, IC’s oversee lesson plan development and execution, classroom management, and student interactions for our summer Teaching Fellows. They mentor and guide our Teaching Fellows over the course of the summer, providing ongoing formal and informal feedback on each teacher’s performance. Furthermore, IC’s have a unique opportunity to shape the professional path of tomorrow’s educators.

During the summer, our Teaching Fellows instruct a core academic subject (Literature, Writing, English Language Arts, Math, Science, or High School Prep) and an elective course of their choice. As subject area experts, IC’s help our Teaching Fellows transform their passion into rigorous and engaging lessons. BTSV also implements a specific teacher training sequence, known as BIT (Breakthrough Instruction Training), which includes research-based best practices.

What background and skills do you have?:

  • At least two years of professional teaching experience in English, Math, or Science at the upper-elementary or secondary level. Teachers of other subjects will be considered for the High School Prep Instructional Coach role.

  • Graduate degree in education or subject area is a plus.

  • Demonstrated track record of improving student achievement.

  • Knowledge of direct instruction, classroom management, and inquiry-based learning.

  • Experience in planning and/or executing professional development opportunities for teachers.

  • Experience with training, supervising, or coaching personnel is preferred.

  • Commitment to Breakthrough Silicon Valley’s mission and goals as well as a passion for educational equity.
