Project Liberty is seeking an experienced marketing, communications, or organizing professional to build and lead a movement centered around the demand for a better digital future grounded in web3 and blockchain technologies. Successful candidates have a strong track record of identifying and building audiences, managing audiences up a ladder of engagement toward desired outcomes, and using a data-driven approach to inform campaign strategy, refinement, and evolution. The ability to translate the technical features of web3 that can deliver value for civil society will be critical to success in this role.

Project Liberty

Project Liberty is a nonprofit organization that aims to create a new civic architecture for the digital world that returns the ownership and control of personal data to individuals, embeds ethical values into technology, and expands economic opportunities for web users and developers alike. The organization seeks to accelerate the world’s transition to an open, inclusive data economy that puts citizens in control — a future in which all people can benefit from their participation and contributions. The success of this work depends on many people and organizations actively working together to shape a better future.

Project Liberty is working to engage diverse voices and equip them with the critical infrastructure needed to catalyze change. The tech team behind Project Liberty has developed a groundbreaking open-source protocol called the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP) to serve as a new infrastructure for the next generation of the web. Project Liberty is also bringing together networks of organizations that seek change, including the formation of McCourt Institute, to help ensure that digital governance is embedded and prioritized in the development of new technology.

Position

Project Liberty is seeking a leader for its Movement team, the programmatic function that is building social capital and awareness of the opportunities for emerging technologies to build a better digital future, one that strengthens democracy, creates economic value for users, and protects the privacy and mental health. To ensure that web3 and emergent technologies coming about now are created with ethics, values, and ethos that were missing in the design of web2, it is critical that civil society engage with technologists and policymakers who are building and regulating our shared digital future. The Head of Movement for Project Liberty will be charged with identifying key audiences necessary to build this social capital, designing and delivering strategies to engage each of those audiences, and encouraging the adoption of decentralized web applications.

Responsibilities

  • Refine the vision of the Movement team within Project Liberty; define key audiences and metrics for success

  • Develop audience-specific strategies to achieve desired outcomes from each, including but not limited to: technologists, youth, media, civil society organizations

  • Develop a comprehensive strategy for multi-stakeholder events, to encourage cross-pollination of ideas and information across audiences

  • Manage a portfolio of grants to partner organizations who have extended reach or penetration with key audiences in service of shared engagement goals

  • Create organizational capacity to respond to current events that intersect with campaign objectives

  • Build the team and systems needed to manage an innovative, iterative and fast-acting campaign hub

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or advanced degree in a related field; education does not take the place of robust/relevant work experience

  • Minimum of 15 years senior-level marketing, communications, or organizing experience

  • Experience working successfully and collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders (e.g. board members, senior management, and colleagues across all teams)

  • Track record of successfully engaging networks of people and communities to drive impact and mission oriented results

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills – ability to build consensus across internal and external constituents, listen well, and empathize with others

  • Highly organized strategic thinker with significant experience working across departments and/or divisions at a mid-size, complex organization

  • Excitement for or expertise in the content of Project Liberty’s work and familiarity with web3 and blockchain ecosystems
