Position Description

Study Clinician – Part-Time

JOB SUMMARY:

Researchers at the Military Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (MiCOR) Program at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) are looking for a paid study clinician with a Ph.D. or PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology to lead intervention groups for a research study on weekday evenings in early 2022. The group leader does not have to be licensed. This is a great opportunity for someone who is looking for supervision hours and wants to get more experience in mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and/or health education interventions.

Research participants will be adolescents with high depressive symptoms at high risk for type 2 diabetes. As part of the study, three intervention groups will be conducted: cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and health education. The study clinician will be asked to commit to leading two cohorts of all three intervention groups (a total of six groups). At most three groups will be running simultaneously at any one time. All groups will be virtual and will be supported by a trained co-leader.

Each intervention group will consist of approximately 5 adolescents and will last about 1 hour/week for 6 weeks. In addition to intervention delivery, the study clinician will also facilitate the completion of questionnaires and conduct risk assessments before, during, and after each group session as necessary. The study clinician will also complete training and supervision related to the interventions. Compensation is competitive.

The MiCOR program exists as a cooperative agreement between the Defense Health Agency of the Department of Defense and the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland.

The mission of MiCOR is to define best practices related to the prevention and mitigation of cardiovascular disease in the military in order to enhance personnel readiness, minimize healthcare costs, and reduce cardiovascular morbidity later in life. This multidisciplinary program integrates expertise from fields including cardiology, psychology, pharmacology, and metabolic disorders, among others. MiCOR supports both basic research and randomized clinical trials in active-duty personnel, retirees, and their dependents to evaluate and establish state-of-the-art approaches for treating conditions that give rise to cardiovascular illnesses. We are focusing on many physiological, psychological, and behavioral risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases such as high body weight, diabetes, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, atherosclerosis, affect and stress concerns, and dysregulated eating behaviors.
