The Role

We are looking for a Research Associate to join our Fermentation team in RTP, NC.  This research associate will join a small, dedicated team responsible for demonstrating strain and process performance at bench scale, along with supporting technology transfer of strains and processes into and out of the team. Successful candidates will have prior experience in microbial fermentation, will be able to quickly learn new concepts that are specific to our technology and approach, and will be an exceptional team player.

Please note that this position is supported by grant funding and is initially offered for a 12-month term, subject to the terms and duration of the grant.

Responsibilities

  • Bioreactor setup, monitoring, and turnaround.
  • Analyze, summarize, and report on experiments.
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance and coordination of repairs as needed.
  • Maintain excellent laboratory records and routine quality tracking.
  • Maintenance of safe practices and work environment.

Qualifications

  • Education:  Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or related field (Required)
  • Experience:  Laboratory: 1 year (Required) 
  • We prefer candidates with technical training in chemical engineering or bioprocessing.  In addition, we prefer candidates with experience in the following areas:
  • Understanding of key chemical engineering principles that impact fermentation bioprocesses (e.g. mass transfer)
  • Direct, hands-on experience with bench scale microbial fermentation (pilot scale is a plus)
  • Direct, hands-on experience with aseptic technique
  • Quantitative, data-driven analysis of experimental results and an analytical mind-set
  • Experience in drafting and revising detailed SOPs and protocols
  • Capability to manage multiple workflows and experiments within a single day
  • Ability to effectively work in cross-disciplinary teams
  • Must be a self-starter, motivated, scientifically curious, and collaborative.
  • Flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) experience, especially LabGuru
  • Direct experience in statistical analyses and Design of Experiments (DoE)
  • Familiarity with Python or similar programming language preferred.
