Amani Public Charter School is a stand alone middle school for grades 5-8, located in Mount Vernon, NY. The mission of the Amani Public Charter School is to provide Mount Vernon, New York students in the 5th through 8th grades with the academic skills necessary to succeed in competitive high school programs, college and the career of their choice. Since Amani opened its doors in 2010, it has provided the Mount Vernon community with the option of School Choice.

About the Role 

We are looking for an HR generalist to oversee all aspects of human resources practices and processes.  The HR generalist is the go-to person for all employee-related issues. Duties will involve managing activities such as job design, recruitment, employee relations, performance management, training & development and talent management. The job of HR generalist is important to Amani’s success. People are our most important asset.  The HR generalist will be the one to ensure we have a happy and productive workplace where everyone works to realize our established mission and objectives. Promoting institutional values and shaping a positive culture is a vital aspect of  the HR genralist' role.

The HR generalist will have a broad knowledge of human resources functions, from hiring to onboarding and from employee compensation to evaluation. They will also organize training, administer employee benefits and leaves and craft HR policies. You will be the main point of contact for employee queries on HR-related topics. Your goal is to ensure the HR department operations run smoothly and effectively to deliver maximum value to the organization as a whole.  

Responsibilities

Address employee issues as they arise, assisting employees with understanding employee benefits and administering the Organization’s benefits plans, handling payroll and assisting employees with onboarding and associated paperwork.

  • Work closely with managers to ensure employees' adherence to the Organization’s policies and procedures.

  • Develop and implement HR programs that are aligned with organizational goals and compliant with local, state and federal regulatory requirements and laws.

  • Plan, direct, and manage all human resource initiatives, such as recruitment, compensation, benefits, training and employee relations for the organization.

  • Conducting internal investigations should issues arise and recommend appropriate actions to such issues.

  • Manage the HR team members reporting to the role.

  • Provide project management support and coordination for Human Resources activities and initiatives. 

  • Support programs that promote recognition, development, and retention of key talent 

  • Perform tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, leaves and performance 

  • Process actions including, but not limited to new hires and terminations, including preparation of applicable paperwork execution in partnership with the company's PEO 

  • Facilitate new hire orientation and ensure a positive onboarding experience.

  • Generate a variety of standard and ad-hoc reports to support management and measure performance.

  • Assist with the annual performance review cycle, including employee performance management documentation, communications, and other materials.

  • Maintain accurate employee records, compliance with I-9, and complete other HR tasks as requested 

  • Lead organizational initiatives that ensure Amani’s mission and values are understood, embodied, and celebrated in our work

  • Collect information via surveys, focus groups, and other means to assess staff experience, continuously improve practices, and sustain successful initiatives

  • Provide training and facilitate other forms of professional development to educate the entire workforce on issues of race, cultural diversity, bias, discrimination, and sustaining an inclusive and equitable culture

  • Support efforts to create and maintain a positive relationship with employees and address employee concerns or grievances with particular attention to managing conflict in an equitable and just manner

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

  • Certificate or advanced degree in Human Resources ( preferred) 

  • Knowledge of best practices and legal requirements related to the full employee lifecycle, from pre-hire, compensation & benefits, retention, employee relations, and performance management

  • Experience working in a nonprofit organization or school

  • Ability to communicate and build relationships effectively and appropriately with diverse range of individuals, including but not limited to current and prospective staff and external partners

  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with a sharp attention to detail

  • Superb organizational, project management, and process-building skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office and Google Drive applications

  • A commitment to contributing to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive setting
